7 Predictions for New England Casinos in 2022

Happy New Year! New England Casinos saw some relief and normalcy. Rough times are still in the future for a couple of months. 2021 will continue to bring more prosperity to the region’s casinos. Here are 7 Predictions for New England Casinos in 2022.

7 Predictions for New England Casinos in 2022

(In No Particular Order)

Prediction #1 – Casinos Will Be Tough For Gamblers

The 6th Prediction connects two parts of a new Casino Philosophy present. First, the understaffing will continue, and table minimums will still be high. It’s explained by Anthony Curtis of Las Vegas Advisor. When casinos reopened, a small group of serious gamblers rushed to their casinos and spent much more money than ever before. Watching this phenomenon, casino CEOs realized they could make lots of money without going back to 2018 staffing and gambling practices. Expect what existed in 2021 to continue in 2022. It will continue to be less staff and more $25 craps tables.

A perfect example of the tightening of rewards is the recently released MLife changes. Joshua at Know Your Slots examines the changes and how they affect MGM players in his excellent article “More Mlife Changes Coming and They Don’t Look Good.”

Prediction #2 – Bally’s Will Continue to Build New Empire

Bally’s is now the name. Assessing its properties is now its game. Nevertheless, Bally’s President George Papanier believes it will increase its national presence.

“Our company aimed to unite our increasingly national footprint under a singular preeminent brand.”

The Rhode-Island based company will continue to make the once-mighty Bally’s Park Place relevant in Atlantic City. The most important goal is a complete overhaul of the hotel-room inventory.

In late 2021, Bally’s provided the company’s own sports betting platform, Bet.Works and bought daily fantasy sports operator Monkey Knife Fight and SportCaller, a free-to-play game provider. 2022 will continue implementing a unified branding initiative, which complements the considerable geographic growth.

Bally’s Corp. has agreed to acquire the Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel and Casino from Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc. The acquisition will achieve this in early 2022.

The Flagship Twin River Hotel and Casino will continue to expand at home, and updates began in 2021. I predict Bally’s Tiverton will also be announcing an expansion in 2022.

Bally’s Twin River Lincoln Casino is their Flagship property. More extensive than most people realize – two large casino floors

Prediction #3 – The First Three Months Will Still Be Difficult

Our third Prediction of 7 Predictions for New England Casinos in 2022 regards more of the ever-changing pandemic. We will turn the Covid corner in 2022 by June. January’s surges from the holidays will complicate what we know about new variants. Many casinos will continue staff masking, and some will reapply some safety protocols such as mandated masking for guests. Some industry giants will begin to take away a chair or two from table games. But you should sell that plexiglass stock while you can!

Prediction #4 – Entertainment Will Approach Normal Schedules

Casino Entertainment will continue to add performances. New England casinos opened their large venues with decreased capacities and stringent protocols in 2021. Inside events will still see masking. But with more guests getting vaccines and boosters, mandates will decline. While the occasional concert may get postponed, music, comedy, and sports will reign in 2022, similar to pre-pandemic days.

Prediction #5Encore Boston Harbor Will Consider Expansion

Prediction 6 of our 7 Predictions for New England Casinos in 2022 is a repeat from last year. Last year, I predicted Wynn Resorts would be looking to make Encore Boston Harbor stand out among the rest by expanding a well-needed entertainment venue. I was surprised that many thought this was a foolish prediction. Well, I was wrong – it wasn’t a consideration in 2021, but it is now, in 2022! So, I was off a year, big deal.

However, this will be a “big deal” for the entire Boston area. The company has applied with Everett’s planning department to build its first project on those 13 acres: a block consisting of a 1,800-seat indoor events venue, a two-story restaurant, and a 2,200-car parking garage connected to the casino across Broadway by a 425-foot-long enclosed pedestrian bridge. The complex could accommodate everything from boxing matches to rock concerts to trade shows. Wynn aims to start construction sometime in 2022 and finish it in 2024.

Prediction #6 – Sports Betting and iGaming Will Rule The News

“We’ve been talking about this for close to a decade in this state. And I think Connecticut ought to participate and it ought to be led by the tribes.”

Gov. Ned Lamont, Connecticut

Connecticut jumped headfirst into the realm of legalized sports betting and iGaming for 2022. It will continue to boost state revenue through Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, & the Lottery’s sports-betting companies. The Super Bowl could be one of the most significant events at both tribal casinos since their inception over 25 years ago.

Revenue will continue to rise in the Nutmeg state. However, the tribal casinos will still see revenue fluctuate – two steps forward, one step back.

Massachusetts will finally legalize sports after numerous tries over the past three years. But, after creating lounges tailor-made to become sportsbooks, all three casinos in Massachusetts will sit and wait.

By the way, Maine and Vermont will continue not to have approved sports betting.

Prediction #7 – Non-Smoking Will Continue To Dominate Casinos

Yes, sorry to say, non-smoking in many casinos are here to stay. That’s not to say smoking won’t be allowed, but the locations in the casino will be few. After three years of non-smoking casinos, opinion is changing. Employees have asked for this for a long time and deserve a better health environment. In New England, only Connecticut’s and Rhode Island’s casinos could go back to allowing smoking, which seems like a tremendous advantage over Maine and New Hampshire.

Now, I enjoy a cigar occasionally while gambling like the next guy, but fresher air throughout a casino during the day is enjoyable and healthier for everyone. Impossible to take away smoking in casinos? Well, that’s what they said about smokeless restaurants.

2022 will be a big step forward. Small steps at first, but the summer will be a time to remember!
