MGM Springfield isn’t just a gambling destination, it’s a resort, complete with great entertainment planned in and around the casino. Concerts and events presented will be offered in conjunction with the city’s MassMutual Center — which is managed by MGM — as well as CityStage and Symphony Hall.
MGM Springfield’s business parent – MGM Resorts International – has the connections, resources and experience to run the MassMutual Center better than it has been and provides the city of Springfield an Entertainment Center that will match the rejuvenation of the city with the addition of MGM Springfield.
MGM Springfield, the luxury resort casino scheduled to open in the fall of 2018, and Spectra by Comcast Spectacor, an expert in hospitality and entertainment, will jointly operate the MassMutual Center, a multipurpose arena and convention center, in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts. MGM Springfield would serve as the venue management company and Spectra would provide food and beverage services through its Food Services & Hospitality division. Michael Mathis, President and Chief Operating Officer for MGM Springfield, said “This market has unique offerings for convention goers and local residents alike, and the MassMutual Center should continue to be an integral part of what attracts visitors to downtown.
In case people in the northeast are wondering if MGM can manage big arenas, just check the history of the MGM Grand’s Garden Arena. It has been at the top of the list in boxing events, music performance, and any other type of big arena happening since Barbara Streisand opened it in 1993. And the new T-Mobile Arena is one of Las Vegas’ hottest new sports and entertainment venues, opening in 2017.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Besides the 10 bowling alleys, the resort provides an eight-screen movie theater; an 8,000-square-foot pool; a spa; a 10-lane bowling alley; and a “Topgolf Swing Suite” where you can test out your fairway chops in a three-simulator lounge – smaller than Las Vegas, but similar to the ones at Foxwoods, Foxboro and Boston. Also, December- February, the Plaza will transform in part to the Plaza’s ice skating rink from 11:00AM to 7:00PM.
There is no doubt here at NETG that MGM with bring entertainment to a high level. It will also have events that cater to the residents of Springfield and surrounding communities. But parking at the casino and getting to the venues might be an additional charge as attending any event in any city. Walking from MGM Springfield to MassMutual is not that far, but not the safest path at night. Of course, Uber & Lyft are options, as well is the LOOP, Springfield’s mass transportation for the downtown area. It might be a great addition to provide shuttle buses, especially to Symphony Hall. There is something to be said for all encompassing casinos for convenience & safety.
Mohegan Sun still has the arena that provides top quality acts in a variety of formats, from basketball, boxing & lacrosse, to headliner concerts such as U2 & Britney Spears. MGM Springfield will entertainment venues in their portfolio that other smaller New England casinos will not. MGM Springfield, Mohegan Sun & Foxwoods, with two outstanding theaters (one of which was built by MGM ironically) will compete for top-notch entertainment.
The possibilities of the two properties that MGM Springfield will be managing for it’s large entertainment events is more proof that it is a resort to be reckoned with.
