I had been away from MGM Springfield for much too long. The pandemic had kept us all away a year ago. But, as in other casinos across New England, MGM shows life. Today was Mystery Point Multiplier day AND a tool giveaway. So, MGM was bristling with guests by noontime. So, here’s my Trip Report To MGM Springfield from June 2021.
Platinum parking still feels like a special perk. The valet parking is still not in gear yet, but that’s similar to all New England Casinos.
The first thing to do is check your offers and promotions. Today was Mystery Point Multiplier. A swipe of the ole’ MLife Card at Rewards Kiosks on Mondays in June qualifies for a point multiplier up to 20x. I got 2X, but it’s better than nothing!
Morning is My Time
If you know anything about me by now, that morning is my favorite time to gamble. For better insight, read an update of one of my first posts from 2013 – Mornings In the Casino Are the Best for Me.
Next, I took a stroll around the place. I saw a lot more space made, with many 3 and 4 caroms of machines. It felt comfier than before.
MGM Trip Report – My Anticipated Return
The Video Poker Area
The area behind the Island Bar is no more. But don’t be sad. They have moved most of them in front of the Island Bar. The previous VP area is closed off. MGM Springfield is creating a new sportsbook area to be ready for legal sports gaming in Massachusetts. So while sports waging is still possible, MGM Springfield will be prepared when it happens.
Welcome Back To MGM Springfield Slots
It’s kind of a magic act going on in this casino. At one point, there is still an absence of slots. And yet, everywhere you look, there are brand new slot machines, some I haven’t seen at Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, or Twin River. An example is this expanded four-screen Ultimate Fire Link Power 4 and a Quick Hits Four Screen Slot.
Cleanliness, Drinks, and Amenities
The self-serve drink station is getting back in business, but the drink staff still delivers coffee. It’s still a charming facility. It continues to be clean – at least in the morning. Drink service was always a contention for gamblers and was acceptable and available.
Welcome Back With Success – Pardon Me For Bragging
My play was lots of fun and financially successful. It doesn’t happen like this often, so forgive me for being so grateful for my success. Anytime I leave with a little over double my bankroll is a great session. Here are some success stories from the morning:
Slot machines now fill The Commonwealth Bar and the Poker Room. But unfortunately, poker is still not approved as a gaming option in MGM and Encore Boston Harbor, and it doesn’t look good for the foreseeable future.
The Hotel Is Beginning to Open Up
Yes, finally. My next MGM Trip Report should have a hotel update. The MGM Springfield Hotel is opening up. Hotel accommodations are one of the many highlights of the property. Even the hallways pay homage to Springfield’s historical past. If you can stay, because offers are being sent out to guests first, ask for the 2nd floor. The ceilings are higher, and the 2nd floor has free coffee and tea (hopefully continued).
Available Dining is Still Disappointing
After my session, it was lunchtime. With 50% off for seniors at the South Market, I had a lobster roll on my mind and wanted lobster in my tummy. Alas, the wait at Jack’s Lobster Shack would be too long. Three parties were already waiting for their order, and three more were in line to give their order. The Hearth Grill was closed; I chose Bill’s Diner or noodles.
So, I went to TAP Sports Bar, only to find it closed.
As I said, available dining is still disappointing at MGM Springfield.
Good-bye Asian Table Games
MGM Springfield has diminished the number of Asian table games on the casino floor to one baccarat table. Pai Gow poker is gone and, according to pit staff, not about to return. MGM Springfield has had trouble enticing Asian players through the doors since its opening. With less space due to the pandemic protocols, I guess something had to go. Too bad MGM couldn’t set aside one of the many blackjack tables for Pai Gow poker.
Electronic Table Games
Stadium Gaming is still represented, but I didn’t see any individual electronic roulette games. With real roulette allowed now by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, it makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is the space taken up by these HUGE new electronic big six wheels by Interlock—high edge to the house, but not many seats.
A new Interblock product is also on the floor. This unique craps adaptation is a single-player machine that engages players with personal live dice popping in front of the single-player (behind glass)—more on this after my next visit.
I enjoyed my visit. MGM Trip Report – My Anticipated Return reminded me it’s not that far and a good “locals” casino with terrific extras. But, my one-hour drive to Springfield may be a while from now, especially when other casinos offer tier multipliers. In addition, I expect more changes in the coming months to the casino floor, all of which will improve services, amenities, and the casino floor.
Visitation is rising as well as revenue. Let’s hope 2021 will be MGM’s breakout season!
