The Five Steps for Blackjack Players – John Marchel

BlackjackThere are two sides to every story.

Last week I ranted on whining blackjack players who consider beginners to the game, and players that play hunches instead of basic strategy a detriment to their winning in blackjack.

Here’s the related article:  Blackjack Is NOT A Team Sport

It felt good…..I’m moving on…..

What what about the other side of the story from the experienced player’s point of view? – what about beginning blackjack players and what you should be doing to prepare for both you and your fellow players?

The following article, with permission by Frank Scoblete of Casino City gives the first five steps for anyone beginning to play blackjack.  It actually suggests what to do before even getting to the table.  Experienced players would greatly appreciate if all inexperienced players had followed the steps in this article.

More information on John Marchel & Frank Scoblete are provided below.  Their numerous books and articles on gambling together would be enough for any recreational or AP to improve success at gambling.  Now, read on…..

The Five Steps for Blackjack Players

1. Learn basic blackjack strategy

This is one of the foundations to your program. You must know “basic strategy” for blackjack. This is knowing when to hit, stand, double down and split. When do you take insurance, how do you surrender? These are all part of basic strategy for blackjack. If you expect to be a winner you must know this strategy.

2. Practice

  • Practice at home. You can learn an awful lot about blackjack in the comfort of your home. Remember, it’s also a lot cheaper to practice at home then trying to learn at the casino. You can make a lot of mistakes when first learning blackjack; however, it won’t cost anything at all if you do all your practicing at home.
  • Use the computer. There loads of blackjack games on the market today that will help you learn and allow you to get proficient at the game. Look all around the Internet. You can find lots of help there.

  • When first learning to play, go against the 25 cent machines. On your next visit to a casino, look for the blackjack machines. This will help give you a lot of playing experience without costing you very much. You can take all the time to make a decision without other people bothering you. It is a very inexpensive way to begin your casino experiences.
  • Later, play at the low-stakes tables. Once you have mastered the game, start off against low minimum tables particularly during the day time. At night most casinos raise the minimum bets at the tables, therefore, it is cheaper to play during the day.

3. Scout for the best casinos.
Not all casinos have the same blackjack rules. One casino might allow doubling on 10 and 11 only, while across the street they might allow doubling on any two cards. Here are some of the good rules to look for:

  • Single deck
  • Dealer stands on ALL 17s (10-7 and A-6)
  • Double down on any two original two cards
  • Resplit aces
  • Double down after split allowed
  • Surrender

4. Look for winning signs.

Blackjack Table

Blackjack Table – 1)check the player limits on the placard on the dealer’s right; check dealer rules on table.

  • Go through the casino and look for winning tables to play at:
  • Are there any signs that the players are tipping the dealer?
  • Do the players have any stacks of chips in front of them?
  • Is the dealers tray low in chips and are any of the tray slots empty?
  • Are there any sounds of happy players?
  • Are you winning more hands then the dealer?
  • Are you getting the 19s and 20s and is the dealer getting the 15s and 16s?

5. Use money management techniques – The dealer will always have the advantage over the player because they play their hand last. It then becomes important that you use some sound money management techniques to off set the house advantage. Here are some techniques:

  • Establish a bankroll. This is entertainment money, not bill-paying funds.
  • Set up your bankroll for the trip, day and session. Do not “borrow” funds from one day or session to play in another one.
  • Know when to quit. Quit on a winning streak and quit when you start to lose.
  • Start to increase your bets on a winning streak, not during a losing one.

I hope this is helpful to all blackjack players.  Now, about John & Frank:
