The Brook In New Hampshire Passes Five Million Mark
As the wall inside says, “Live Free and Play.” The Brook, the newly remodeled casino, race, and sportsbook in southern New Hampshire, has generated funds for more than 75 charities since opening in 2019. So let’s take a deeper look into America’s largest charity casino.

Seabrook Greyhound Park
I got my first taste of recreational gambling at the Plainfield Greyhound racetrack in Connecticut and enjoyed it. When many states banned greyhound racing, I often wondered what would happen to these facilities. Lincoln Greyhound park in Rhode Island turned into Twin River Casino and Hotel, now a significant part of Bally’s. But most stumble along with simulcast betting.
But not in New Hampshire. Seabrook Greyhound Park opened in 1973 but closed when New Hampshire banned Greyhound racing in 2010. So Eureka Casino Resorts completed its multimillion-dollar remodel of the historic 75-acre property in 2019. It is now The Brook; as they say, the rest is history.
The Brook – Seabrook Completely Reimagined
The Brook is America’s largest charity casino just over the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border. It recently announced that it had surpassed the $5 million threshold for the money raised for New Hampshire charities since its opening in February 2019.

New Hampshire contributes 35% of all gaming revenue directly to local organizations. In addition, the Brook has donated funds to over 75 charities on a rotating basis over the last three-plus years.
The Brook’s most recent renovations include a new enlarged casino floor, new gaming machines, an outside deck, a ballroom, and event space. In the coming months, The Brook will continue to expand and add games, which will help boost the number of charities that the casino benefits to more than 100 and capture more charitable gaming dollars for those charities.
“We’ve invested millions to breathe new life into and totally reimagine the former Seabrook Park, now completely reinvented as The Brook. We’ve made meaningful and impactful partnerships with dozens of New Hampshire charities, working deliberately and diligently, not only to raise money, but to create opportunities to build awareness for their services and to call for volunteers.”

Historical Horse Racing Machines
Historical Horse Racing machines may be new to New Hampshire but have been around since the late 1990s.
How Do They Work?

Historical racing machines (HHR) look and operate like other gaming machines. However, HHRs determine winners based on previously run horse races instead of randomizing the outcome. The game looks like a traditional slot machine game and functions like placing a wager at an OTB Kiosk. The results are displayed as a graphical representation of a past horse race.
Here’s how Joshua at KnowYourSlots.com expresses it. “The machines are set up so you can choose to watch or replay the actual outcome if that interests you. Or you can tuck it away and focus on the reels, which animate an outcome that coincides with the results of your wager. Bonuses are therefore completely predetermined, as the outcome of the horse race was decided in the past, so the game is just providing slot machine-style entertainment.”
When Did HHR Machines Start?
According to Las Vegas Advisor Forums, “Historical horse racing machines date to the late 1990s. The Arkansas Legislature approved them and installed the first HHRs at Oaklawn in early 2000. Oregon and Wyoming followed suit in 2003, though they were deemed illegal in both states and didn’t return for ten years. Nebraska, Idaho, and Texas followed the exact sequence.
After a similar controversy, Kentucky has become the big kahuna of HHRs. Today, Kentucky boasts just under 4,000 HHR machines at six different sites. In the fiscal year 2020, more than $2.2 billion was bet through them, and tracks operating HHR parlors earned nearly $189 million.
