Twin River Casino’s New Hotel – NETG In-depth Review

Like horses at the starting gate, a huge line had formed and excitement built until at 3:00pm EST when Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello, Senate President Dominic Ruggerio and John Taylor, executive chairman of Twin River Worldwide Holdings Inc., placed the first bets, marking the opening of the Twin River Casino sports wagering.

Now, if you’re thinking Vegas sports books the likes of Caesars or Westgate, think again. It’s more like Golden Gate downtown.

Tiverton, TRMG’s other RI casino is projected to go live with a sports book sometime next month. The Tiverton Casino sports book / pari-mutuel betting is very small.

The racebook at Tiverton has 10 seats.

So they could started ASAP and get ahead of other New England casinos, TR’s setup is temporary, called “Phase 1″ and is found in the third floor in the simulcast wagering area. Staff told NETG that this “Phase 1” area will be kept even after the main sports book is completed.

Wagering is still on the casino property, with online bets slated for the future. The next phase will be completion of the real sports book area overlooking the grassy remains of the greyhound track.

According to Jeff Moony, Staff Writer at the Providence Journal, “Rhode Island will be poised to go online whenever lawmakers are ready. IGT and William Hill power Rhode Island sports wagering. IGT is behind the computer technology, while William Hill is setting the lines.”

A Few Points

  • The State of Rhode Island takes 51% of the sports betting revenue at the start
  • 32% goes to IGT as vendor operations
  • Only 17% of the revenue generated by sports betting goes to Twin River.
  • A Sports Betting Lounge at TR is expected to open in December with dozens of television screens
  • Bets are now allowed on pro sports and college games, but Rhode Island colleges are not available for wagering.
  • Only pre-game betting is available.  In-game betting will be only be ready when the mobile on-line wagering is in place, and that could be for quite a while.
  • Connecticut has approved sports betting, but won’t start implementation until the next legislative session
  • Massachusetts will consider sports betting next year. Data collection by the legislature and Massachusetts Gaming Commission may cause long delay.

Lines continued to form. Here at 8:00pm.

On your mark, get set, ………BET!

Twin River Casino’s New Hotel – NETG In-depth Review

Hotel at Twin River

Twin River is still trying to compete with the big boys in CT and MA. With the addition of tables games a few years ago, a poker room, and of late a hotel, stadium gaming and additional dining options, they are making a play. The following is from our RI Correspondant Miguel.

Twin River Casino

NE Time Gabling recently had the opportunity to spend a night at the new Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI.  The 136-room hotel opened just over a month ago and also features an indoor pool, outdoor courtyard area with a fire pit, fitness center and conference/boardroom.

Twin River Hotel Lobby

The lobby is bright and open.  When I arrived there was no one else in line so I was able to check right in with no problem.  The lobby also features 3 computers for internetaccess, printing boarding passes, etc…  There are a few seating areas as well as a small concession area with snacks and refrigerated items for purchase.  The snack area is on the backside of the centralized check in desk – so if you weren’t told there was food back there, you’d never know.  There is a $10/night resort fee to cover the wifi, pool, fitness area and the usual hotel amenities.  After a quick check in, I was off to my room.

Right down the hallway is the indoor pool with 8-10 chaise lounges and an enclosed gas fireplace in the stone wall.  There are tall glass doors which, in nicer weather, can open right out to the courtyard.

Up to the room!  The room is spacious and modern with nice pops of color.  As with the Twin River Tiverton Hotel, the standard hotel dresser has been replaced with bookcase/shelving unit under a wall mounted flat screen tv.  Unlike the Tiverton hotel, the Twin River hotel features dark wood tones as opposed to the mostly white toned Tiverton.  A chair in the corner and a window seat by the window (go figure!) provide a few options for reading or watching tv. A nice use of wall space – across from the closet is a 3 hook area for coats.

The bathroom continued the color theme and contemporary features.  The king bed was just as comfortable as Tiverton Hotel and also featured two wall mounted reading lights directly above the bed which could be easily reached without fumbling to a night stand for a lamp switch.  Even though my room was at the end of the hallway, the hotel was quiet and didn’t hear any door slamming throughout the night.

  1. At the one end of the hallway you can look out on to what used to be the main attraction at Lincoln Greyhound Park – the old dog track including the still standing race results board.   If you look over to the right, you can see in to the stands where race fans cheered on their favorite greyhound.  Unfortunately park of the racetrack is now a parking lot, so it may only be a matter of time before they ‘pave Lincoln Park and put up a parking lot’.  Out the other end of the hallway, you can look down onto the VIP and North entrance parking lot.

While we were walking around we popped in to check out the other new addition to Twin River – Stadium Gaming which recently opened in the previously mentioned race viewing area – located off the 2nd floor non-smoking table area, between Sbarro and Dunkin Donuts.  The 30-seatstadium area is very spacious, though as the only attraction in that area, you certainly feel disconnected from everything else going on in the casino.

Now the quick hits:

Wifi was service was strong and fast and covered throughout the property
The room has ample outlets for including USB charging ports
Ice machines are only available on the 1st floor – hopefully that’s only a ‘right now’ plan because that’s certainly not convenient if you want ice and you were on the 3rd floor like I was
The room didn’t have any pen or pad as most hotels do – I have a pen and pad collection which certainly speaks to where my travels take me
Instead of curtains in the room, the windows are dressed with two roller blinds controlled by pull chains.  Seems like a recipe for disaster after time but we will see.
I was surprised there was no literature in the room – nothing that listed dining options within Twin River, spoke to local attractions or anything to encourage Rhode Island tourism
There isn’t a dedicated parking area for the hotel and I can only imagine if you end up parking in the west or south entrance you end up dragging your bags through the casino since there really isn’t a direct entrance other than the north entrance.  (Valet is at the West entrance)
For future consideration it would be great if Twin River added a way to get to the 2nd floor non smoking area from the hotel.  While the property is not SO big that you’re walking miles to get around, for anyone overly sensitive to smoke or just for convenience, it would be a welcome addition

Overall, the new Twin River Hotel is a great addition and they are already selling out Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  As NE Time Gambling has said previously, it’s definitely not a destination resort/hotel – but we’re pretty sure that isn’t their goal.  I would certainly suggest staying a night to experience one of the newest Rhode Island hotels.  While I was only 15 minutes from home – I still felt like I was on a mini-vacation and enjoyed every minute of being away.

Cashing out for now…Miguel.
