Tiverton Casino Gets Another Look From NETG Staff

It’s been over a month since Twin River Management moved it’s Newport Grand slot parlor 20 minutes east to Tiverton, Rhode Island. With a chance to stay in the hotel this time, the NETG trio of Bin, Bert & Miguel descended on the newest casino in New England.

Tiverton Casino Hotel – Our Last Summer Trip Report

The Hotel

Tiverton Hotel

The three story hotel is to the right of the casino. The rooms are a little small, with a very bright ambiance.  No bureaus, but adequate shelving below the wall attached flat TV takes its place, similar to MGM Springfield. There is no coffee maker in room, but the Dunkin Donuts attached between the casino and hotel is open 24 hours.  The beds are some of the most comfortable of all New England casino hotels I’ve ever experienced.  The quiet, comfortable and restful rooms at Tiverton Casino’s Hotel are highly recommended.

**Noteworthy – If you are staying over, it’s good to know that the third floor rooms have refrigerators.

SUPPER at Trattoria Romana

Inside Trattoria Romana

This fine dining Italian Cuisine was a smart choice for Tiverton. There are other restaurants, each a little different -Trattoria Romana in Lincoln, Johnston & Wakefield, as well as the newest Trattoria Express in Lincoln. The concept & experience at Trattoria Romana were designed to offer a comfortable dining experience with moderate prices. The menu is large and has something for everyone. The chicken dishes were very tender. I had the Vitello Saltimbocca alla Romana – Veal medallions topped with imported Prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella cheese and fresh sage pan-seared in a marsala wine sauce and served over pappardelle pasta. The veal was delicious in a subtle sauce. All the entrees were large portions. See above about which floor has refrigerators  to take the rest of your meal home.

**Noteworthy –  Torre Restaurant Group and Trattoria Romana gift cards are currently NOT accepted at Tiverton Casino Hotel.

RANDOM NOTES

If you want to play Pai Gow Poker, expect to be patient.  Dealers are very slow (slowing down the already slow-paced game) and had to keep checking house way for setting their cards. Low Limit on a Sunday night was $25. As with most casinos (but not MGM Springfield) the Fortune bonus can be bet with any denomination, but $5 gets the envy addition.

Vents in floor recycle air throughout the casino

Smoke continues to be more problematic than they thought. The modern air exchange system cant seemingly keep up on busy weekend nights.

The casino feels more spacious than other New England casinos of comparable size, such as Oxford Casino Hotel in Maine, and both MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Raceway & Casino in Massachusetts.

Craps is nothing special, but does offer $10 limit tables. There is no special bets like the Firebet or the All Tall, All Small.

Cashier is slow and undermanned.

Craft Beer, Red Sox & Patriots. What a night!

They have a special Free SlotPlay match promotion going on, matching CT & MA casinos mailers.

IPourit – card connected to credit card must be returned or $4 charge

Finally, it seems that this casino will be busier than Newport Grand ever was. Table games, stadium gambling, high end dining, the iPourIt Beer Wall, and a hotel are definitely huge upgrades. Tiverton is not pretending to be more than what it is – a locals casino. It will do well in the New England Casino landscape.

Tiverton Casino Hotel – Our Last Summer Trip Report

It’s been a summer of casino visits and openings.  First, we started with both Maine casinos, investigating the new Oxford Hotel and Ox Pub. Then, two trips to AC to check out two new hotel/casinos on the Boardwalk – Hard Rock & Ocean, staying at each as well Borgata. Then a two night stay at MGM Springfield.

Finally, our last quest was to visit Tiverton Casino Hotel.

Rendering – Tiverton Casino/ Hotel.

We will stay over another time.  This was just a quick look the weekend of its opening. And I’m glad we did.  I would characterize it as a cute “boutique” casino & hotel. It’s not big, but well done with some things I haven’t ever seen.

The first positive was that there IS underground parking.  From previous renditions, I thought there was only uncovered parking in front of the casino.

Hotel Lobby – Courtesy NETG

The entrance was nicely done, with the hotel lobby and hotel entrance directly to the right. The place is bright and welcoming. But the real star, the only on of its kind in New England, is the iPourIt Wall. iPourIt recently installed a 26 tap self-serve beer wall!  This is really cool – here’s how it works.

  1. Go to the Center Bar, get special Tiverton iPourIt card, which you keep and is connected to your credit card.
  2. Hold the card against drinking choice, a green light shows up
  3. Then, just pour

It’s that simple.  You can pour up to 32 oz. before returning to center bar to do it all again.  You can pour as much or as little wine or beer as you like. A group of 4 small beer glasses are available for beer flights.  The beer and wine selections are fantastic.  The Newport Craft Brewing Frosty Freeze Stout and Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale were tops.  The also have craft IPA’s, as well as familiar names like Blue Moon and Dogfish Head. There is a small area to sit, drink and listen to music.

Thanks, Mackenzie! Great Job! – Courtesy NETG

Thanks to Mackenzie, the beverage manager for her great explanation and discussion about iPourIt.  I know its a nice new casino, but who needs gambling with this?  and yes, you can bring your beverage back to your favorite slot or table game.

Here’s the rest of our report:

 GAMBLING

Casino feature’s 32 table games and up to 1,000 slot machines, 18 Hybrid stadium gaming stations for baccarat, roulette & blackjack.

Stadium Gaming – Courtesy NETG

Table games (with lowest minimums noted) include Blackjack ($15, $25, $50), Roulette ($10), Baccarat, Three Card Poker ($15), Craps ($10), Spanish 21, Let It Ride, and Pai Gow Poker. (although 1 baccarat table was the only Asian game choice open at 10:00 on a Sunday)

Comfortable space – Courtesy NETG

It feels more spacious than MGM, with more space in the slot aisles. Similar to MGM Springfield, they offer the latest in slot games, only 40% less than Springfield.  Thew difference is that MGM Springfield is a destination resort where Tiverton is a boutique convenience casino/hotel.

If I thought the video poker wasn’t playable in Springfield, the VP at Tiverton, like its parent casino Twin River, is pathetic. Twenty machines at the quarter denomination, JOB is 7/5, Bonus is 6/5, DDB 8/5.  There are deuces vp in the old VLT’s from Twin River’s early days of slots, but pay tables are still questionable. (Royals are 2000 credits)

From those days of old, there are 19 VLT – Power Station Classics – to the right of the self pour beer and wine station.

Bonus slot play is property specific, so even though points can be earned together at both TR & TIV, slot play offers can only be played at property offering it.

Rewards desk is immediately left after entering. Racebook is very small – 12 seats.

Ample restrooms throughout along the perimeter.  And yes, they have cool hand blowers on each side of the faucet at each sink (see image below)

Smoking is allowed, with the exception of a small non smoking area next to the food court.

But the smoking is not as big of a deal at this property due to 18,000 vents in the floor giving the casino a ventilation system that blows in fresh air from vents on the floor.

There is a VIP lounge for top level players, but wasn’t open yet. 6 high limit slots are outside the entrance.

Entertainment will include DJ’s and small groups on the stage behind Center Bar

Dining includes two fine dining- Trattoria Romana, and Tuscan Chophouse. The fast-food options are Mooyah, which serves burgers and fries, Pie Five Pizza Co., and Jacky’s Galaxie Sushi Bar. There’s also a Dunkin’ Donuts near the entrance of the hotel.

Food Court – Courtesy NETG

It was a quick trip, but we will be back. It was comfortable, but not very large. Next time we’ll stay over, play some table games and pour our own brews – all the more reason to try their hotel!

Twin River Casino Hotel Adds to New England Status

Twin River Casino, Lincoln, RI

With all the talk about casino expansion and saturation, one management group seems to be under the radar – Twin River Management Group.

Maybe it’s because it isn’t as accessible to media, or maybe because of its seemingly clandestine way it does business, concerning player rewards, revenue reports, and promotions.

If you were to go to their website, you may think Twin River’s Social Gaming website it the biggest thing going for it.  But, things are beginning to ramp up for TRMG.

The final approval came from The Planning Board in Tiverton in May, 2017. The 7,500-square-foot gaming facility is expected to open next year, after Rhode Island voters approved a ballot referendum three years ago to expand commercial gambling in the state.

The area design for Tiverton Hotel & Casino. expected roundabout in upper right corner.

The Newport Grand slots parlor will be closed as the Tiverton Casino project at William S. Canning Boulevard and Stafford Road. According to the plan, a traffic roundabout is required to be built before the casino and hotel can open in July 2018, easing traffic congestion at the busy intersection in east Tiverton, near the Fall River, Massachusetts, line. The Tiverton casino will boast 1,000 slot machines30 table games, and an 80-room hotel.

Steve Ruddock, friend of NETG, commented in July in his post TWIN RIVER OPENING A TWIN CASINO IN RHODE ISLAND”

on PlayMA.com, saying, “The casino industry in the region tends to overlook Twin River in Lincoln (RI). It shouldn’t be though. People should view the casino as a major force in the area. In recent years, the former dog track turned slots parlor added table games, including a poker room. It is also in the process of adding a hotel. And the company will become a two-headed threat next summer, once the Tiverton project opens its doors.”

The hotel that Steve alluded to has already started construction.  Thanks to our RI correspondent, Miguel, the pictures below show the beginnings of the hotel:

The hotel took years of convincing the RI legislature that it wouldn’t compromise the hotels in Providence the ability to house casino guests with access just 10 minutes away.  Finally, it is a reality.  Late to the party, but still increasing TR’s chances in the bigger scheme of casino competition.

Currently, TRMG manages 4 properties:

  • Twin River Casino – Lincoln, RI
    • Hard Rock Hotel & Casino – Biloxi, MS
    • Arapahoe Park – Aurora, CO
    • Newport Grand Casino – Newport, RI (to be moved to Tiverton, RI.)

Different ownership from the Hard Rock group that bought the Taj in Atlantic City

They aren’t the kind of big player to make Steve Wynn tremble in Boston, MA., but they have made the CT casinos, Plainridge Park in Plainville, MA and even MGM Springfield take notice.  In recent years, making the second floor non-smoking, adding table games and a poker room, and upgrading its VIP Amenities room (the former “Fado” restaurant) has all made the region wonder how relavent they will be in the future New England casino landscape.

With a hotel and new presence in Tiverton, they may not be flying under the radar for long.
