Tiverton Casino Gets Another Look From NETG Staff

It’s been over a month since Twin River Management moved it’s Newport Grand slot parlor 20 minutes east to Tiverton, Rhode Island. With a chance to stay in the hotel this time, the NETG trio of Bin, Bert & Miguel descended on the newest casino in New England.

Tiverton Casino Hotel – Our Last Summer Trip Report

The Hotel

Tiverton Hotel

The three story hotel is to the right of the casino. The rooms are a little small, with a very bright ambiance.  No bureaus, but adequate shelving below the wall attached flat TV takes its place, similar to MGM Springfield. There is no coffee maker in room, but the Dunkin Donuts attached between the casino and hotel is open 24 hours.  The beds are some of the most comfortable of all New England casino hotels I’ve ever experienced.  The quiet, comfortable and restful rooms at Tiverton Casino’s Hotel are highly recommended.

**Noteworthy – If you are staying over, it’s good to know that the third floor rooms have refrigerators.

SUPPER at Trattoria Romana

Inside Trattoria Romana

This fine dining Italian Cuisine was a smart choice for Tiverton. There are other restaurants, each a little different -Trattoria Romana in Lincoln, Johnston & Wakefield, as well as the newest Trattoria Express in Lincoln. The concept & experience at Trattoria Romana were designed to offer a comfortable dining experience with moderate prices. The menu is large and has something for everyone. The chicken dishes were very tender. I had the Vitello Saltimbocca alla Romana – Veal medallions topped with imported Prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella cheese and fresh sage pan-seared in a marsala wine sauce and served over pappardelle pasta. The veal was delicious in a subtle sauce. All the entrees were large portions. See above about which floor has refrigerators  to take the rest of your meal home.

**Noteworthy –  Torre Restaurant Group and Trattoria Romana gift cards are currently NOT accepted at Tiverton Casino Hotel.

If you want to play Pai Gow Poker, expect to be patient.  Dealers are very slow (slowing down the already slow-paced game) and had to keep checking house way for setting their cards. Low Limit on a Sunday night was $25. As with most casinos (but not MGM Springfield) the Fortune bonus can be bet with any denomination, but $5 gets the envy addition.

Vents in floor recycle air throughout the casino

Smoke continues to be more problematic than they thought. The modern air exchange system cant seemingly keep up on busy weekend nights.

The casino feels more spacious than other New England casinos of comparable size, such as Oxford Casino Hotel in Maine, and both MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Raceway & Casino in Massachusetts.

Craps is nothing special, but does offer $10 limit tables. There is no special bets like the Firebet or the All Tall, All Small.

Cashier is slow and undermanned.

Craft Beer, Red Sox & Patriots. What a night!

They have a special Free SlotPlay match promotion going on, matching CT & MA casinos mailers.

IPourit – card connected to credit card must be returned or $4 charge

Finally, it seems that this casino will be busier than Newport Grand ever was. Table games, stadium gambling, high end dining, the iPourIt Beer Wall, and a hotel are definitely huge upgrades. Tiverton is not pretending to be more than what it is – a locals casino. It will do well in the New England Casino landscape.

Casino Loyalty is Nothing to Underestimate – CT’s Third Casino Shouldn’t Wait

The Mashantucket Pequots and Mohegans, the two tribes seeking to jointly set up a third casino in Connecticut to counter competition from MGM’s nearby Springfield casino project have decided to refrain from approaching the current session of the legislative assembly for approval.  At the same time, many legislators in CT want to see a study done to show the need and prove that a third casino would do all it’s supposed to do – namely counteract the jobs and revenue loss.

Recently, I had the pleasure to speak to someone in the VIP lounge at Mohegan Sun.  Let’s call her “Sue.”  Sue, an accountant, feels that Mohegan Sun is the casino for her and her husband, because of the ambiance and they way they are treated. Sue and her husband live 10 minutes west of Springfield – you know, where MGM Springfield is being built.  Basically, it comes down to loyalty.  Which is why waiting to build a third casino is opening the door for loyalty to go north to, not stay in the Nutmeg state.

How important IS loyalty, anyway?  Cristina R. Crofts of University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to a good look in 2011 with her “Exploratory Study of Casino Customer Loyalty Programs.”  She explains three important theories in creating loyalty between casino and guests.

  1. Reciprocity theory – is when customers feel the gaming company is making an investment in them, thus, returning their investment in the company. Unfortunately, this usually means those who invest in the casino at a higher financial level are given higher returns, and casinos then give high level players the most return on their investment.

MLife Rewards Club of MGM will be the loyalty program for MGM Springfield.

  2. Resource theory is “when individuals invest intangible and particularistic resources in each other, they tend to be more satisfied with the relationship, tend to continue the relationship for a longer period. So casinos should invest intangible resources in their most valuable customers instead of tangible and non-particularistic investments like money or free or discounted goods and services which may not be enough to keep customers satisfied for the longterm and may actually be depriving the casino from creating more intimate relationships with customers. Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, MA has come under scrutiny in its increase in free slot play as an example of something that may not last in drawing gamblers.

Casino Hosts are the personal connection to the casino patron.

Casino Hosts are the personal connection to the casino patron.

  3. Human qualities / emotional bonds. Casino companies must establish meaningful relationships and build on emotional connections with customers. This can be created by providing care, creativity, luxury, and relaxation with a warm, welcoming, and caring staff. Furthermore, by portraying these attributes in marketing efforts such as design of tournaments and special events, invitations and offers.  Casino customer loyalty programs should be more transparent so players know how to control their points & offers, and know as much as possible about how to accrue points, comps and offers.

Underlying Ms. Crofts treatise seems to be an underlying factor that is something we’ve all known – and the casino CEO’s know it to.  The most powerful reason for choosing a place to gamble, stay, eat, and be entertained is is if that place makes you feel special and appreciated.

Case in point is Miguel’s guest trip report from yesterday.  (see yesterday’s trip report “Three Concerns for Twin River Casino“)  If you leave somewhere feeling like you’ve been screwed, there are many other places to spend your money.  Even in New England, there is, or will be, a casino within a radius of 90 miles or less to gamble in.  Let your dollar be your consumer power.

First Light

First Light Resort Casino

Both MGM Springfield & the Mashpee Wampanoags “First Light” Resort are out of the gates and eager to have a chance for New England’s gambler loyalty. To steal CT & RI’s casino patrons away, it will come down to “how special they are treated.”  But if there is no third casino, or it is delayed, the newest casinos will have the advantage – especially when your name is MGM & Wynn.

The New London Day included an editorial yesterday outlining reasons not to delay in the third casino proposal in Connecticut.  “The intent is to keep casino-goers from the greater Hartford area from taking their business to MGM Springfield.”

Agreed.  The threat MGM poses to Connecticut’s casinos in southeastern CT is valid.  No matter how you feel about MGM, their purpose is to make money as is the rest of the casino industry in New England & the U.S.  The problem for Connecticut is – they’re good at it! Continue reading
