Mohegan Sun is finalizing plans to host more than 30 college basketball teams as it becomes a modified bubble for several early-season tournaments, including two being moved from New York.

MGM Springfield Not Increasing Problem Gambling

A report from for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission indicated the presence of casino gaming in Western Massachusetts had not increased problem gaming.

The report included data from November of 2019, which indicated gambling participation was seen as having increased from 70.9 percent to 73.8 percent, with state lottery revenues dropping slightly from 62 percent to 61.2 percent

Positive Prediction For 2021

“The stable outlook for the U.S. gaming industry reflects our expectations of casinos’ road to recovery over the next 12 to 18 months,” analyst Adam McLaren wrote. “The industry is facing high hurdles for a return to normal.”

Much of the second quarter decline was recovered in the third quarter, and profit is expected to grow by about 5% in the fourth quarter, which began Oct. 1, McLaren said.

Mohegan Gaming Gets Final OK in Nevada

Nevada gaming regulators have officially approved that the tribe will become the first Native American gaming enterprise to operate a casino within the Las Vegas Strip corridor.

Mohegan Gaming will oversee the 60,000 square foot casino space, and Virgin Hotels will operate the property’s 1,110 guest rooms, which will be part of the Hilton Hotel’s Curio Collection.

Roulette Players In Massachusetts Cautious To Return

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted to allow roulette return at MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor, but with COVID-19 precautions. These are live dealer tables. Electronic roulette has been in play since reopening.

Connecticut Casinos revenue Continues Decline

Mohegan Sun posted lower slot revenue in August and September, and Foxwoods reported a drop in revenue in July, August, and September.

Gamblers Still Staying Away In Massachusetts

Crowd sizes at Massachusetts casinos are still “well below” occupancy levels authorized by the Gaming Commission.  Loretta Lillios, interim director of the commission’s Investigations and Enforcement Bureau, said, “the number of people visiting Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor had remained stable and well below the occupancy caps imposed by the commission when it allowed casinos to reopen in July.”

Connecticut Casinos to Continue at 25% Capacity

Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun have announced that they will continue to operate at 25% capacity. This is in response to a spike in the coronavirus across eastern Connecticut. In contrast, Gov. Ned Lamont is moving to phase 3, easing some restrictions. On June 1st, the tribes defied Gov. Ned Lamont’s preference to wait to reopen.
