Comedy Clubs at New England’s Casinos

Want to laugh? Want a distraction? Here is an overview of Comedy Clubs at New England’s Casinos.

From a young age, I knew I loved listening to stand-up comedians. My interest in the ’60s & ’70s was highlighted by the antics of Steve Martin, George Carlin & Robin Williams ( I used to watch”Mork and Mindy” every Thursday night!) The 1970s saw the birth of the comedy club, and it took America by storm. Stand up comedy has had its ups and downs in popularity but continues to be part of a casino’s entertainment portfolio.

Yes, it was the 1970’s that sparked the birth of comedy clubs. Comedy acts had become big business in Las Vegas in competition with all the day’s top headliners. Since the ’50s, Las Vegas fought for the best comedians as part of the new Vegas nightlife, such as Redd Foxx, Jerry Lewis, Bill Cosby, and Don Rickels. Joan Rivers and George Burns, to name a few.

The Birth of the Comedy Club

But it was the 70’s that allowed for an entertainment list of just comedians at a night club. Buildings were built or renovated to house performances for young and old comic performers.

ThoughtCo.com Patrick Bromley is cited as saying, “On both coasts, new clubs were opening that allowed comics to get in front of audiences every night of the week. In New York City, The Improv has been open since 1963. Catch a Rising Star appeared on the scene in 1972 and provided nightly showcases for both new and established comedians. On the West Coast, The Comedy Store opened in 1972 in West Hollywood. It was successful enough that two more locations were opened by 1976. A West Coast branch of The Improv also opened in 1975.”

Since the ’70s, Comedy clubs have made their way into casinos around the country. Of course, casinos in New England have some of the best performers of this genre in the big arenas – Mohegan Sun Arena, Foxwoods’ Grand & Fox Theaters, Twin Rivers’ Event Center, and the new addition of MGM Springfield’s MassMutual Center.

But our casino’s still draw guests looking for a laugh with small venues as well, dedicated to this genre – and that is what this post is all about.

So, which of New England’s casinos offer comedy clubs?  Well, keep reading to find out…..and that’s no joke!
