Connecticut Casino Opening Updates – The Connecticut tribal casinos opened earliest of all New England Casinos. They are now ready to open up even more this week with additional dining, shopping, entertainment, and hotel stay. Both are still operating at a limited capacity.
How Could They Open Without Gov. Lamont’s Consent?
Across the US, there are a little more than 500 registered tribal casinos. Unfortunately, there is little that the state governments can do to restrain these Native American gaming establishments. In part, it’s because these establishments come under tribal sovereignty. Connecticut is no different. Both tribal casinos opened portions on June 1st. Gov. Ned Lamont and his advisers opposed it and cited the threat of the coronavirus.
Lamont called the decision “incredibly risky.” Thousands of casino workers have been laid off or furloughed, damaging the economy of eastern Connecticut. State Sen. Cathy Osten praised the casino openings. “As other Connecticut businesses begin to emerge from the COVID-19 lockdown. So will the Mohegans and Mashantucket Pequots,” she said. “It’s time.”
Mohegan Sun Continues Opening Options

As expected, from Vegas to Connecticut, table game minimums are higher. All slot machines are not available due to social distancing. For more from those who have boldly visited, here is some commentary:
For Mohegan- it started $15-25 yesterday morning, and last night around 6-7, it went up to $50 for blackjack and roulette and $25 for craps. Pai gow was a minimum of $50 all day. $10-$25 carnival games. All games were available, but I didn’t play any. Did walk past baccarat, but I don’t remember the minimums, but I think they were $100. Now, most gaming tables have Plexiglass in both the sky and earth casinos. They have “place chair here” stickers on the floors for craps and roulette tables. Craps and roulette do not have plexiglass, and neither do any of the Asian gaming tables. – Justin H, in Art in The Game The MGM Springfield Private Community

Mohegan – not all tables, including craps, had plexiglass. I stayed over this past weekend and saw maybe 1 or 2 BJ tables at $15 majority was $25 or above; I was lucky and only waited about 20 minutes before I got a table…My only concern was Foxwoods only have 2 casinos open seem more tightly packed. Mohegan just about everything was open, and virtually had no problem finding a machine when I wanted to play – Brian Q, in, Everything Foxwoods*Mohegan Sun*MGM Springfield*Twin River*Tiverton*Encore Facebook Community
I’ve been to Mohegan, CT, 2 times in the last 2 weeks. First was a Friday night, comped room. Plenty of $25 tables at 3-2 bj. Earth had 6-5 bj at $15 min. Not a ton of glass partitions. My trip last Tuesday, plenty of 3-2 BJ with $15 min. Plexiglass on most tables now. Tons of hand sanitizer and wipe stations. Both times I went, all games were available. Also, now restaurants have opened to include indoor dining. – Aaron G, in New England Casinos (Casino Biz, Gambling and Recreational Insights) Facebook Group
