Internet Gambling – Part 1, A Brief History

The reality of online gaming a few years ago seemed a long way off. But recently, many states have already started legislation, whether online poker or sports betting. Fantasy Sports seems to find a lull when so much more seems to be arriving soon to a gambling state near you.

The 1990’s

The first online casino began operation in 1995 with an offering of eighteen online games, and since then the industry has boomed. This phenomena has truly revolutionized gambling, allowing gamblers to place wagers on all sorts of games and events from the comfort of their home. And while it has been unlawful to bet online, Americans have still found ways to participate in online gambling.

Almost every single internet gambling site is physically located offshore. These sites offer all types of gambling games, from traditional table games and slots to lotteries and ports wagering.

But events changed the way online gambling was available to American players. To start to regulate, and eventually end online gambling, most major American credit companies prohibit payments to online gambling services. These policies are mostly self-implemented due to the high risk of fraud and bad debt in the online gaming industry.

After credit card companies banned online gambling credit, gamblers began to use online payment providers such as Paypal with increasing frequency. However, more pressure was exerted on the ability for Americans to use such services and gamble online with real money, so most foreign online casinos refused American gamblers.

The 2000’s

Poker Black Friday – the end for most online poker sites at the time.

The European Union then ruled in favor of online gambling companies according to their restraint of trade rules, permitting European companies to continue offering online gambling to all member states of the EU. And many jurisdictions within Europe, such as the UK, Malta, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man offer online gambling licensing services, along with the long standing licensing locations of Canada and the Caribbean. In 2008, South Africa and Italy joined the long list of countries to introduce legislation to regulate and endorse online gambling as a perfectly legal form of adult entertainment.

Online Poker Offered

Mobile gambling inside the casinos is an option in some states, such as New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada. Pennsylvania is close behind. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. Many states are looking into legalizing more than just online poker.  Why now?  For the states, it’s simple:

  1. As a source of revenue for the state.
  2. To strengthen their existing gaming establishments and/or lottery.

My next post will take a look at where online gambling is headed, and a specific look at how it includes and may impact New England “brick-and-mortar” casinos, with the help of Steve Ruddock, our favorite online gambling expert.

That’s all for now.

Online Gambling Guide For Beginners

Years ago, poker was on the rise.  Every casino started opening up poker rooms, and online poker became as popular as ever.  Online casinos also became popular.  While most were run away from the U.S., American friendly casinos still took your play.

The year 2011 is known as the infamous year of Black Friday, when the U.S department of Justice seized the domain names of PokerStars, Full Tilt & Absolute Poker, effectively freezing the bankrolls of their player base.

From that moment, poker has declined.  Online poker sites have declined, poker room in Brick-and-mortar casinos, and American Credit Card companies put the pinch on all worldly casinos taking American Currency or credit.

Today, we introduce Daniel Clark to our ever-growing group of NETimeGambling followers.  Since many states are now considering online gaming of some sort to bolster state funds, Daniel’s post is a timely one.  We hope you enjoy it.

Casinos have been there since ages but online casinos seem to be more popular than the live casinos since past couple of decades. For beginners, it becomes arduous to get started as they are not at all familiar with casino games, rules, and related details. If you are one of those, a complete guide about online casinos is what you need the most.

Although providing all the guideline in just one article is a bit difficult, you can consume some of the ‘must know’ information before you start playing. Gambling online for the first time can be an overwhelming experience. It might also make you a bit perplexed as there are thousands of games to choose from, several different ways of wagering, and many other things to consider for betting with fun.

Once you commence playing, it would appear natural to try new games and learn their tactics involved in the games. But before you go for online gambling, there are some key factors you need to contemplate as below:

– Games of chance

The results of any casino games depend on random events and that is why casino games are believed to be games of chance. If odds are in your favor, you win big; if they are not, you might lose. It is all determined by a spin of the roulette wheel, or spins of slot machines, turn of a card or a roll of the dice.

These things are not under your control and whether you win or lose. It is crucial for you to accept the fact that outcomes would be always unpredictable. It is one such factor that makes casino games thrilling as well as risky.

– The house wins, most of the time!

The casino houses do not need any luck to win. Whether it is a brick and mortar casino or an online one, the games are mathematically programmed and that’s why they have higher chances of winning than you. The law of probability is connected to every game they offer which puts the betting odds against you.

Except counting cards in Blackjack, which is really difficult, there are no other ways to turn the odds in your favor. Thus, their mathematical advantage would help them to make the profit in a long run.

– Winning is not impossible

In spite of the fact that the house wins, it is not right to say that you would fail to win your every bet. As casino games are games of chances, the results are unpredictable for both, the casino house and the player. It is likely to work in your favor and improves your chances of winning against all the odds. As it is mentioned earlier the mathematical advantages are effective to the house for a long term profit.

If you a play a hundred hands in a blackjack game, you might end up winning more than 50% of them with a decent reward. But if you keep playing and then chances of losing are higher than winning. Luck factor in casino games work like this, a little good fortune and some tricks for s short time-span would give you more reasons to win.

The thing you need to keep in mind is that luck is not the only factor when it comes to gambling. Some games have small house edge so you can stick to these games. Also after playing for a few times, you start getting the knack of the game. From your experiences, you would learn which trick works when while betting.

If you are keen to know more about new casino games and their rules and regulations, you can refer to NorskCasinoGuide . (You will need to translate into English). Online Social Casinos

download (1)A growing trend is the number of “brick-and-mortar”casinos to offer online casinos from their websites.  These games are for fun and not like true online gaming where you use real money and can possibly make real money like an actual casino. However, for the most part, internet gambling is illegal in the US, except a few states which allow internet poker within state borders.  That and whether Daily Fantasy Sports is gambling is another topic for another date.  (Yes, it’s gambling.)

Two years ago, only three casinos in New England offer a social gaming site as well – Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, and Hollywood Casino, Hotel & Raceway. Wednesday, we will look at the social gaming available now through our seven New England casinos.  Today, we look at social gaming at it is in general.

Social Casinos, either from a casino website or through the many apps available, seem to be thriving.  They are more like playing casino games without real money.  However, the player can buy more credits to continue playing.

Why play at all if it’s not real gambling?  According to Casino.org, people can play for free in their browser or smart phone almost anywhere, and win real prizes.  “Facebook is the most popular social media platform for online games… [and] Out of all of the people who gamble on social media, 61% of them do it on Facebook.”

According to GamblingSites.com, social gaming companies use different strategies to get you to share and come back to play their games:

  • Continuous goals. – You are given different goals to achieve, each one harder and more time consuming than the last. Each action you take will push you towards a goal that can lead to higher gaming capital.
  • Gaming capital. – This comes in many forms, such as badges, trophies, accolades and achievements. These can be earned by playing or by completing tasks, such as sharing the game or your results to your profile.

There are casinos with their own mix of games, and there are others that specifically represent a slot company.  A quick review of the favorites include:

Slotomania – Slotomania offers slots, slots, and more slots, all on multi mobile platforms.  None of their slots can be found in brick-and-mortar casinos.

CaesarsCasino – This online casino is connected to the Caesars Entertainment, formally Harrah’s & Bally’s.  It includes blackjack, roulette, video poker & baccarat as well as tons of slots from numerous slots makers. Casino promotions with extra credits are offered.  It is also connected to their rewards program, Total Rewards. You can convert your Online Reward Credits to cash deposited directly into your account. For every 1,000 Reward Credits converted, they will add $10 to your available cash balance.

DoubleDown Casino

Double Down Casino,  – They offer a whole slew of options: free slots, free bingo, free poker, free video poker, and free blackjack, all on Facebook. Not only that, but you can also download their mobile app and do some gambling on your mobile device (smartphone or tablet). Everything is free at DoubleDown Casino.  They offer mostly IGT based slots.  DD has slot, VP and other tournaments daily.

myVegas, – myVEGAS was named “Best of 2016” by iGaming Business and eGaming Review. It features exclusive freebies and bonuses with MGM partners like BELLAGIO, ARIA, MGM GRAND, CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, ROYAL CARIBBEAN, VDARA, MIRAGE, NEW YORK NEW YORK, and CIRCUS CIRCUS.  They also include offers from other sources not affiliated with MGM, such as Stations Casinos (Las Vegas), Gray Line Tours, Genting Gaming, Royal Caribbean, and more.  There are also two other myVegas sites, one for just blackjack and the other featuring Konami slots, such as “China Shores.”

Jackpot Party, & HotShotCasinoSlots (Facebook) feature IGT / Scientific Games slots, similar to Double Down Casino, but offer slots only.  Jackpot Party was Williams Interactive’s entry into the world of social casinos before they were consumed by Scientific Gaming. Progressive slots are featured daily.

Aristocrat’s Heart of Vegas features  features slots made by Aristocrat Gaming, originally from Australia.  You will find Buffalo, MoreChili, Wonder 4, and many more of your favorites made by Aristocrat.  Progressive slots are featured daily.

Is there a downside to social gaming? – Many, such as Dr. Mark Griffiths, a Professor of Gambling Studies at Nottingham Trent University’s International Gaming Research Unit, think it might lead the person to signing up to a real money casino with unrealistic expectations. Or, maybe manipulate them into buying in-game purchases to try to win more often, since “the behavioral and social conditioning of social slots and gaming is no different to real-money gambling, apart from the fact you’re not “risking” real money.”

Another downside, considered by communities around the country with casinos that also offer “free” social gaming is the consideration of addiction – addictions that don’t have to come down to winning or losing money. But that “addiction can also come in the form of time spent. The time you lose playing these games can have a negative impact on your life, too,” so says Dr. Griffiths.

More research needs to be completed before conclusions are found.  But one thing is for sure – it has become big fun for players, and big money for gaming companies.

Wednesday, we look into the social gaming sites offered by New England’s casinos.  Tomorrow, we pause from the playing and turn to ComiConn at Foxwoods.
