Laughter Is The Best Medicine – Comedy Clubs at New England’s Casinos

George Carlin

From a young age, I knew I loved listening to stand-up comedians. My interest in the 60’s & 70’s was highlighted by the antics of Steve Martin, George Carlin & Robin Williams ( I used to watch”Mork and Mindy” every Thursday night!) The 1970’s saw the birth of the comedy club, and it took America by storm. Stand up comedy has had it’s ups and downs in popularity, but continues to be part of a casino’s entertainment portfolio.

Yes, it was the 1970’s that sparked the birth of comedy clubs. Comedy acts had become big business in Las Vegas in competition with all the top headliners of the day. Since the 50’s, Las Vegas fought for the best comedians as part of the new Vegas nightlife, such as Red Foxx, Jerry Lewis, Bill Cosby, and Don Rickels. Joan Rivers and George Burns, to name a few.

The Birth of the Comedy Club

But it was the 70’s that allowed for an entertainment list of just comedians at a night club. Buildings were built, or renovated, to house performances for young and old comic performers.

ThoughtCo.com Patrick Bromley is cited as saying, “On both coasts, new clubs were opening that allowed comics to get in front of audiences every night of the week. In New York City, clubs like The Improv, which had been open since 1963, and Catch a Rising Star, which appeared on the scene in 1972, provided nightly showcases for both new and established comedians….. On the West Coast, The Comedy Store opened in 1972 in West Hollywood. It was successful enough that two more locations were opened by 1976. A West Coast branch of The Improv also opened in 1975.”

Since the ’70’s, Comedy clubs have made their way into casinos around the country. Of, course, casinos in New England have some of best performers of this genre in the big arenas – Mohegan Sun Arena, Foxwoods’ Grand & Fox Theaters, Twin Rivers’ Event Center, and the new addition of MGM Springfield’s MassMutual Center.

But our casino’s still draw guests looking for a laugh with small venues as well, dedicated to this genre – and that is what this post is all about.

So, which of New England’s casinos offer comedy clubs?  Well, keep reading to find out…..and that’s no joke!

NEW ENGLAND CASINO COMEDY CLUBS

ROAR! COMEDY CLUB at MGM SPRINGFIELD – The historic Armory at MGM Springfield will open Roar! Comedy Club in January 2019. The unique comedy series will feature an eclectic mix of nationally popular comedians as well as rising industry stars.

COMIX at MOHEGAN SUN – Comix Comedy Club is open every Wednesday through Sunday with entertainment nightly and late night shows Thursday through Saturday. They showcase some of the best talent, from local favorites to national headliners.

THE LOFT at PLAINRIDGE PARK CASINO & RACEWAY – The Loft is located above the property’s Racebook. It’s intermittent schedule as a Comedy Club brings in excellent comedians, like New England’s own Bob Marley.

FOX THEATER at FOXWOODS – While it’s not a “Comedy Club” (yes, it’s a huge venue) the Fox Theater does offer some the best comedians on a regular basin in a large concert setting.

Remember, “Laughter is the Best Medicine” because:

  • Laughter relaxes the whole body. .
  • Laughter boosts the immune system.
  • Laughter triggers the release of endorphins,
  • Laughter protects the heart.
  • Laughter burns calories.
  • Laughter lightens anger’s heavy load.

So, get out and enjoy some of the opportunities to get healthy by visiting the comedy in our casinos.
