BROCKTON CASINO STILL ALIVE?

Brockton Casino Driveway

Brockton Casino, no longer an option.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission received a letter on Wednesday from the Chicago-based Rush Street Gaming asking for another chance to bring a $677 million casino to Brockton. Rush Street and Mass Gaming and Entertainment are now seeking reconsideration for the project more than two years after it was rejected in a 4-1 vote by the state gaming commission in April 2016.  Rush Street and Mass Gaming began the letter by referring to a notice posted online in July 2016 by the state gaming commission, pledging to hold a public discussion “at a time deemed appropriate” about the short- and long-term interests of southeastern Massachusetts. The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe originally planned to open a destination casino in Taunton in 2017, but construction was derailed by a federal lawsuit.

Meanwhile, there is increasing support for the Mashpee casino in Taunton. Read the following article for more details:   “Support grows for legislation for Mashpee tribe”

MGM SPRINGFIELD GETS “LAST CALL” EXTENSION

Paul Tuthill, from WAMC Northwest Public Readio reported “The Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted 4-1 Thursday to approve, with some conditions attached, an alcoholic beverage license for MGM Springfield that will allow drinks to be served on the casino floor until 4 a.m. – two hours later than the time all other bars in the state are required to close……but only if they are actively gaming would they be able to consume (alcohol) after that 2 a.m. time frame.” MGM Springfield Vice President & General Counsel Seth Stratton said the proposal before the gaming commission is to have extended hours for alcohol service only on the casino floor, saying “If you are a gaming customer and would like to have a cocktail as you continue to game up until 4 a.m. we will offer that service, but if you want to hang out at a bar, our bars close at 2 a.m. just like any other bars in the community.” Brian Hallenbeck , The Day staff writer, reported Foxwoods wants later ‘last call’ to keep up with Mass. casino.  Click on the link to learn more about CT’s casino’s reaction.

IT’S GAME ON AT MOHEGAN SUN

Mohegan Sun announced that it plans to open Game On, a 23,000-square-foot interactive arcade, sports bar and restaurant, this winter inside its new convention center. Game On will feature a luxury bowling alley, ping pong tables, billiards, darts and arcade games in addition to multiple high-definition screens and a 65-foot bar. It will be located on a lower level of the new Earth Expo & Convention Center, which is hosted Barrett-Jackson’s Northeast Auction of collector cars in June. The new venue will accommodate parties and private events.

TOPGOLF IS COMING TO NEW ENGLAND

In the fall, look to TopGolf invading New England’s casinos. Looking for your next party idea or a place to better enhance your golfing skills? Top Golf is a fun experience for all ages that offers a comfy lounge to hangout while you enjoy fantastic food and drinks, all while enhancing your golfing skills. MGM Springfield will be the first when it opens in August. Not to be outdone, Foxwoods jumped into the ring, or should I say the course, possibly introducing it before MGM Springfield this summer. Foxwoods’ Topgolf Swing Suite will offer multiple golf simulator bays, throwback arcade games, a DJ booth, lounge seating and a full-service craft bar with an impressive food and drink menu.

RHODE ISLAND IS FIRST TO LEGALIZE SPORTS BETTING IN NEW ENGLAND

Governor Gina Raymond signed the bill into law a bill allowing legal sports wagering in the state. The Rhode Island General Assembly approved the $9.559-billion budget bill which includes legalized sports wagering. The bill established legal sports wagering at Twin River Casino and “reflects an agreement reached with IGT, the operator of the state’s electronic lottery systems which also won the contract for operating sports wagering in the state.” Rhode Island will retain 51% of sports betting revenue, IGT will get 32%, and the Twin River Lincoln facility and Tiverton facility will get 17%.

EAST WINDSOR APPROVES MMCT ZONING PERMIT FOR CASINO

MMCT Venture in East Windsor, CT, Courtesy WFSB

MMCT Venture, the joint company of the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes, has proposed opening a $300 million 188,000 square foot gaming and entertainment facility in spring 2020. It would include around 1,800 slot machines, 50 table games and 10 poker tables. This is just one of many hoops the Mohegan & Mashantuckets had to go through to build a casino that is said to be able to keep jobs and gambling revenue from flying up to MGM Springfield.  For renderings and the story, click on East Windsor Casino Takes Shape In New Renderings

ComiCONN and TerrifiCon – CosPlay Invades CT Casinos

As comic book movies have become of increasing importance to Hollywood — the big box office of “X-Men” in 2000 is generally considered the turning point — there’s been more and more movie and television involvement  with comic book superheroes, and the events that follow.  Connecticut casinos will be providing events for your inner Superhero, starting this weekend at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Marvel Comics, or DC Comics? Which Superheroes do you prefer?  In case you don’t follow DC and/or Marvel comics, cartoons and movies (like me) you probably don’t know where to start. Here’s a quick review of which superheroes belong where:

DC: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, Shazam, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman and Green Arrow.

Marvel: Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Ant-Man, such teams as the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and the Inhumans, with antagonists such as Doctor Doom, Red Skull, Green Goblin, Ultron, Doctor Octopus, Thanos, Magneto and Loki.

Altered Reality Entertainment presents ComiCONN at Foxwoods Resort Casino, June 30th & July 1, 2018.

Whatever floats your superhero boat, Foxwoods begins the fun with  ComiCONN 2018 in the Premier Ballroom, June 30th & July 1st.  Tickets range from $10 – $99 with the festivities starting at 10:00AM. (For your safety, there are some items that guests are prohibited from bringing inside of the Fox and Grand Theaters. Please click here for the full list.)

The event will include all the same aspects that fans have come to expect from a comic con — celebrity appearances from the big and small screen, industry-leading comic book artists, and the best vendors in the market with toys and collectibles, as well as the ever-popular cosplay competitions and events.

ComiCONN “A Show for the Fans by the Fans!” was created by Erik Yacko in 2009. ComiCONN’s name came from adding an extra “N” to the end of the word “comicon.”  ComiCONN began in  2010 as a one-day event.  In 2014, it expanded to a three-day event in Bridgeport. In 2016, Connecticut ComiCONN joined forces with Altered Reality Entertainment.

Visionary Felix Rappaport Was a Star Wherever He Went

Suddenly, the casino industry had one less visionary. Suddenly, another loss in the world.

Felix Rappaport, the president and CEO of Foxwoods Resort Casino, passed away unexpectedly, according to the casino. Those who don’t follow the casino world living in New England probably didn’t realize what a legend from the Las Vegas we had.

As reported by Brian Hallenbeck of the Day  “Mashantucket Pequot tribal police determined the death was not suspicious, said Lori Potter, a spokeswoman for the tribe, which owns the casino.”

“On behalf of the entire Tribal Council, Foxwoods management team and staff, we extend our deepest sympathies to Felix’s family,” Rodney Butler, the Mashantucket chairman, said in a statement. “With his passing, we have suffered a major loss. Felix’s passion for modernizing and growing Foxwoods, as well as his friendship, mentorship and humor touched everyone who worked with him. We are confident that Felix’s legacy will live on as we continue to push forward on the vision he set.”

Rappaport’s death stunned people throughout the industry. Long recognized as an innovator, Rappaport sought to diversify Foxwoods’ offerings in a bid to lessen its dependence on gaming revenues. He introduced Las Vegas-style entertainment to Foxwoods’ mix, and oversaw the opening of the Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods and, more recently, such attractions as “thrill” rides and a zip line.

“It’s totally shocking,” said Mitchell Etess, a senior adviser to the Mohegan Tribe, which owns Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods’ chief rival. “I’ve been working with him very closely on the East Windsor project and had gotten to know him. He was a really great and unique person — and personality. Obviously, he had been doing a wonderful job at Foxwoods.”

To give you another look at how highly Mr. Rappaport was considered, here is a link from the Las Vegas Sun from 2014.

Behind the scenes, Rappaport was a star on the Strip

Felix, you will be missed. Thank you for all you brought to the New England Casino Landscape. May you rest in peace.

Hotel Review – The Hilltop Alternative to a Foxwoods Weekend Stay

Foxwoods Resort Casino has always been a wonderful place to stay.  When we can, my wife & I will go for a little staycation, and we live only 30 minutes away.

But, on the weekends, hotel rates increase – not just at Foxwoods, but everywhere.  While it’s great to sleep over at one of the four hotels on the weekend, the prices can be prohibitive to most.  There are other possibilities, so I looked and found the Hilltop Inn & Suites.

Disclaimer – remember prices will vary.  The following comparisons for one weekend will, however, be similar to most weekends.

CHECKING IN

Pleasant, quick, and friendly.  The check-in desk gives a good impression and the staff were helpful and efficient.  I had a meeting at 4:00 at Foxwoods.  I arrived at 3:30 and was checked-in, unpacked and on my way to Foxwoods in 20 minutes.

Please note, this is actually a motel, not a hotel, meaning no hallways and your door opens to the outside. It doesn’t really make a difference because the area is safe.

It takes 5 minutes to get to Foxwoods.  But if you’re interested in drinking, they provide a shuttle for the casino.

AMMENITIES

Free breakfast is offered.

Besides the shuttle, a Fitness Center with Gym / Workout Room, free parking and a decent breakfast are included.  Free High Speed WiFi was more like medium speed than fast, but still worked.

 THE ROOM

In was a nice clean room. Two queen beds, with a small dinette table and two chairs. No frills but was well worth the price. Bed was comfortable. Water pressure in shower was great which had been renovated.  It has the typical motel arrangement of the sink outside the shower & toilet.  I found it spacious for two people.  the room also has a free safe for valuables.

Apologies for the dark pic. The lights weren’t on.

The only complaint would be the walls seem a little thin.  A few people were talking next door, not too loudly, and they could be heard in our room.  But nothing a little white noise sound on soft can’t take care of.

PRICE

This is what you’re really interested in, aren’t you. For a weekend night, rates vary between $99 to $129.  For this standard, modest, & clean alternative to the hotels at Foxwoods, I would recommend the Hilltop Inn & Suites.  Foxwoods rates the same night ranged from over $400 at Two Trees Inn to over $1000 at Fox Tower. Hilltop is a comparatively inexpensive choice when visiting Foxwoods for the weekend just up the road.

Gamblepalooza – What A Weekend!

Gamblepalooza is done.  Mark & Dr. Mike are returning to San Diego, others returning to Cincinnati, Chicago, and New Jersey. Cousin Vito & Mikey9’s are back in CT to get this week’s report on it.  And Eric Rosenthal and Ed O’Connor are probably preparing to share their expertise for one of many interviews or articles up next.

I am so happy to have met some great people.  Not only great in terms of gambling knowledge and experience, but really friendly people.

Highlights:

Lots of craps was played.

The Centrale meet-up in the Fox Tower was a wonderful time to drink and chat.

I finally met two couples from Connecticut who follow NETimeGambling.

The Keno Breakfast was a lot of fun at the Veranda Cafe. The only win I had all weekend!

The Group Slot Pull – those are $100 Wheel of Fortune Slots.

The Group Slot Pull  – even though we didn’t win, it sure was fun and brought the 40+ of us together in the High Limit Slot room – to the dismay of the Foxwoods staff.

Meeting with the original ZorkFest Gang- Jay & his wife, Han, Michelle (and others I’m sure I forgot)

Special Thanks

Cousin Vito & Eric Rosenthal – for getting the first get-together started  and planned including the great room rates for a weekend. Great job gentlemen.

Amanda & Ianna – we all know who the foundations are behind the above, previously mentioned characters.

Foxwoods & Staff – a great group of people who gave this group the service and amenities one would expect from a first class resort.

I hope it happens again next year.  Meanwhile, next in our sites is  ZorkFest 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada – Memorial Day.

CT Casinos Should Take Note of Atlantic City’s Future

The Atlantic City shore.

I like Atlantic City.  I stopped going because of the drive (6 hours from my CT home) and because it was getting so sad to see the downward trend from the 2007 recession. It started in 2006 when the Sands was closed & raised. I liked the Sands, a smokey old casino with that long entrance from the Boardwalk.  Alas, it was only a precursor of the downward spiral taking place in the next 10 years.

Now, in 2018, I’m am encouraged. While AC’s emergence will take time, the future looks promising and may not bode well for Connecticut’s casinos.

Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun continue to bring loyal fans from New York & New Jersey to their properties. The only competition at the same level is Borgata.  But excitement & hope are on the horizon for the Jersey Shore.

A Look Back

Let’s visit the past five year casino timeline in Atlantic City, courtesy of ACPrimeTime.

  • February 7, 2012: Claridge casino closed (bought by CET, hotel only)
  • April 2, 2012: Revel opens
  • Feb 24, 2014: TJM Properties buys Claridge from Caesars, creates non-gaming hotel
  • Jan 13, 2014: Atlantic Club closes (still closed, vacant)
  • Aug 31, 2014: Showboat closes (reopened as low quality hotel only)
  • September 2, 2014: Revel closes
  • September 16, 2014: Trump Plaza closes (still empty)

News in the past year or so has been very encouraging. In the Marina, MGM purchased the rest of Boyd Gaming’s half of Borgata. The sole owner of the best and most profitable casino in AC now provides for a distinctive connection to Nevada, as well as MGM’s blooming East Coast portfolio with National Harbor in D.C., and MGM Springfield to be the second completed Massachusetts casino.

Marina news doesn’t stop there.  Harrah’s AC has continued to expand for the convention market, and Landry’s purchase of the Trump Marina property has made the now Golden Nugget an improved player.

A Busy Boardwalk, not so long ago.

A Busy Boardwalk, not so long ago.

But the Boardwalk?  How is it doing?

NETG predicts huge strides will be made on the Boardwalk. While Atlantic Club, Trump Plaza and Showboat casinos remain closed and empty (Showboat reopened as low quality hotel only last year), recent news and progress has produced an enthusiasm Atlantic City hasn’t felt in years.

The Tropicana Casino & Resort Atlantic City is a luxury hotel, casino, and spa resort that has raised the bar with night clubs and the Quarter – the largest non gaming expansion in the history of Atlantic City, featuring world-class dining options, an array of red-hot entertainment and nightlife venues, chic retail establishments, and a luxuriant spa facility.

CET (Caesars Entertainment) has renovated Bally’s casino, and has turned Wild West into a millennial hangout successfully with the philosophy of “five-dollar table games and “low-priced, fun” drinks. Still, CET has a way to go to attempt competing for revenue with Borgata. But with my new Diamond Card status for CET casinos (Thank You Michael Trager & TravelZork!) I was able to enjoy some of the higher level of Caesar’s amenities, and I have to say it was great.

Resorts, now run by Mohegan Sun Gaming, has almost renovated all of its run-down hotel rooms, as well as the casino area with new additional food options. Just a reminder – if you have a Mohegan Sun Momentum Card, you are able to use Momentum points for dining, etc at Resorts AC.

As they say in those infomercials, “Wait, there’s More!”

The biggest news of 2017 was Hard Rock’s purchase of the Taj Mahal. From renovation to completion, it is expected that the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino will create over 3,000 jobs for Atlantic City and provide an ongoing and significant impact to the local and regional economies as well as the revitalization of Atlantic City. It is planning to open this summer (2018).

The biggest news of 2018 already has been the purchase of Revel. The property will be re-branded as the Ocean Resort Casino by its new owners. Together, Hard Rock & Revel could give Borgata  literally a run for their money.

Connecticut Casinos Need to Push Forward

Mohegan Sun

Mohegan Sun Hotel

Concerning AC’s rise in relevance, no other casino properties in New England have more to lose the the Pequots at Foxwoods and the Mohegans. No one depends on New York And New Jersey’s mid-to-high rollers as much as Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.  Continued diversification is required by both.  Mohegan Sun’s projects at this time include the Mohegan Sun Exposition Center, bringing Mohegan Sun’s offerings to over 275,000 square feet of meeting space – the largest expo space along the New York-Boston I-95 corridor and more expansion highlighted in our post “Mohegan Sun Continues History of Expansion With New CEO.”

Grand Pequot Tower Casino

Foxwoods addition of the only covered Tanger Outlets in the country has been very successful. It has also gone a different path to attract guests – thrill rides.  With two thrill rides in place, a zip line and a race track are in order for 2018.

While New England’s large casino/resorts begin to battle it out – Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, MGM Springfield, Wynn Boston Harbor, and yes, even Twin River Casino/Resort with its new hotel – Atlantic city might just have a presence in their rear-view mirror.

Foxwoods Cheesecake Giveaway – Poor Planning or Scam?

As many casinos in the gaming industry, Foxwoods Resort Casino offers many giveaways to their patrons at different tier levels.  I must say that they offer items that are worth the drive.  Some of their jewelry offers have been wonderful.  So, yesterday, I drove 40 minutes out of my way home after my job to pick up a terrific giveaway – a Junior’s Cheesecake.  If you have ever tasted a Junior’s cheesecake, or many of the other desserts on Junior’s menu, you know how much of a high quality, scrumptious item if is.  For what it’s worth, Junior’s breakfast is considered one of the best breakfasts at a New England Casino by NETG as well.

Juniors Cheesecake, Fox Tower, Foxwoods.

The Junior’s Cheesecake Giveaway was obviously a great offer, because by the time I walked to where the giveaway was (4:30PM, and the giveaway was from 12 Noon – 6:00PM), they were all out!  No cheesecakes left with 1 1/2 hours to go.  Instead, they were offering everyone who showed up a lofty consolation offer of, ……… wait for it……….. $10 in free slot play!   Wow, what a deal.

This was so wrong on so many levels, I don’t know where to begin.  Let’s start here.  Your Honor, I present my examination into this giveaway:

ARTICLE #1 – DON’T THEY HAVE SOMEONE IN CHARGE OF PLANNING?

It is typical of Foxwoods to run out of giveaway items – as well as many other casinos in and out of New England.  Many times, Foxwoods will note on your offers page that what was once available was now sold out – a responsible way of handling offers. They are aware if the number of offered items run out because you must sign up for the offer online or call. Someone must keep track, right.  Well, not for Junior’s cheesecake.  How can you run out 75% into the giveaway if some is keeping track ahead of time?  Obviously, incompetent planning was at the helm – or was it?

ARTICLE #2 – WAS THIS INTENTIONAL?

$10 Free Slot Play (or FSP) is a far cry towards treating Foxwoods guests with respect and does not give them the warm, fuzzy feeling of “we appreciate your play.”  In the FAQ’s about the changes in the the Rewards Club (see Foxwoods Rewards – Before and After) Foxwoods states that changes are “…..to provide a better loyalty experience for our loyal and new Foxwoods Rewards Members.”  Me thinks they need to look at the way their marketing managers plan these things – if they truly are interested in “….a better loyalty experience for our loyal and new Foxwoods Rewards Members.”

ARTICLE #3 – $10 FREE SLOT PLAY?   REALLY?

Now, about FSP. Playing full pay Video Poker (JOB) gives you 8 hands at over 99% at $.25 denomination.  But Foxwoods doesn’t have full pay VP in quarters, so an expected value of FSP  would be around $8.  The chance of making more than $10 is possible, but more often than not improbable.  Even less when using it on slots. $10 FSP is not even close to an individual players consolation.

ARTICLE #4 – NON-GAMING DAY & ADT

ADT, or Average Daily Theoretical, is what you are worth to the casino in terms of money spent and time spent on a daily visit.  The higher your ADT, the better your offers, or comps, since your worth to casino is also higher.  It doesn’t take much – such as short play, or a non-gambling day – to cause your ADT to tumble down to nowhere.  This isn’t just at Foxwoods, it’s every casino.

I asked two representatives at the giveaway about using the $10 FSP and leaving.  Representative  #1 told me that, yes, it would be considered a “non-gambling day” if I played the $10 and left.  So let me get this straight – I lose out on the cheesecake, but I get a whole $10 in FSP that probably won’t add up to $10 after play, and it will also damage my ADT?  Great plan to get me there, lose the offer I signed up for, and use the consolation prize to lower my Daily Theoretical.  Genius!

Representative  #2 had a different story. If I played the FSP and left, it wouldn’t count against me. because it was loaded as a different type of FSP.  How did I know which rep was accurate? Was I going to risk killing my ADT on this information?   NOPE!  So, no cheesecake to give me, and Foxwoods gets to keep its $10 FSP offer.  Foxwoods marketing score – Foxwoods 1, Patrons nothing.

Average Daily Theoretical is your value to the casino. The math to determine your ADT is based on the above.

ARTICLE #5 – THE FINE PRINT

I was told that there is always a chance that running out of the item offered might happen.  I was told  in an understanding tone that “It’s in the fine print of every offer.”  There you go.  Buyer beware.  It doesn’t matter that they should be responsible in their giveaways because it’s up to us to read the fine print.  So basically, it’s our fault. Would you want to gamble your money in a place where they aren’t interested in making it right, just because they point it out TO YOU that “it’s in the fine print.”

ARTICLE #6 – THE COST OF NOT PICKING UP YOUR OFFER

It is usual business practice for casinos all over to charge you out of your personal Rewards Credits if you don’t show up.  I understand why, and while I’ve been bitten by this rule, I accept it.  If you say you want the offer, then show up!

$10 FSP does not equal the $25 in credits I would have lost for not accepting it.  If I just turned around and went home, I would have lost $25 in credits.  Instead I had to accept $10 FSP that I couldn’t play.  (See Article #4)  But let’s take this a huge insane step forward.

To earn one credit playing slots, it takes $200 (according to VPfree2) through the slot machine.  Charging anyone $25 in credits then makes the cheesecake worth a whopping $5000 in play.  BTW, playing video poker?  Double it!

So, to summarize so far – lose 25 credits that cost $5000 in play on slots if you don’t claim it, get $10 FSP that anyone with a decent ADT can’t use – and NO CHEESEECAKE!

FINAL CONCLUSION

Was it a well-thought out plan, knowing the draw of Junior’s Cheesecake?  I am giving the benefit of the doubt and saying decisively “no.”  BUT, this was not handled well at all, start to finish. Someone in marketing was not thinking of all the possible considerations for their players.  It not an example of caring for their clientele. The complete misjudgment of this giveaway logistics shows a failure to understand the patrons.  And if anyone at Foxwoods thinks we should all be grateful for any morsel thrown our way for spending our hard-earned money there, it won’t take much to take that money elsewhere – like 10 miles in 2017, or up to Springfield in 2018, or to Boston in 2019.

Bottom line – they’ve got to do better!

Pequot Museum at Foxwoods – Native American Heritage Month Honoring Mother Earth

In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994.  This month, we continue to honor those who were native to this land.

Last Friday the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation hosted a kick-off event themed, “Honoring Mother Earth. The event at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center included an art display, environmental poems written by Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Members, social dances, flute player, crafts, vendors, photo opportunities and much more.

An exhibit at the Pequot Museum now until November 18th, “Our” Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History,” is an educational and cultural exhibit about the history and traditions of the Wampanoag Tribe, and revisits events that have been historical footnotes until now despite the significant impact they had on colonization. The exhibit was created to bring to light key legacies of America’s earliest beginnings from the Wampanoag perspective, a perspective that has largely been left out of the narrative of this iconic moment in American history.
