Yes, Casino Comedy is King in New England casinos. However, stand-up comedy seems to be an entertainment option that is still very popular.
From a young age, I knew I loved listening to stand-up comedians. My interest in the ’60s & ’70s was highlighted by the antics of Steve Martin, George Carlin & Robin Williams. The 1970s saw the birth of the comedy club, take America by storm. Stand-up comedy continues to be part of a casino’s entertainment portfolio.
Las Vegas had paved the way. Since the ’50s, Las Vegas fought for the best comedians as part of the new Vegas nightlife, such as Redd Foxx, Jerry Lewis, Bill Cosby, and Don Rickels. Joan Rivers and George Burns, to name a few.
“I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.”George Carlin
The Birth of the Comedy Club
But it was the 70’s that allowed for an entertainment list of only comedians at a nightclub. Buildings were built or renovated to house performances for young and old comic performers.
ThoughtCo.com Patrick Bromley is cited as saying, “On both coasts, new clubs were opening that allowed comics to get in front of audiences every night of the week. In New York City, The Improv has been open since 1963. Catch a Rising Star appeared on the scene in 1972 and provided nightly showcases for both new and established comedians. On the West Coast, The Comedy Store opened in 1972 in West Hollywood. It was successful enough that they opened two more locations by 1976. A West Coast branch of The Improv also opened in 1975.”
Comedy Clubs in New England Casinos
Casino Comedy is King in New England. As a matter of fact, the caliber of stand-up comedians that entertain our visitors runs the gamut. Not only are the headliners seen at our largest venues, but we can hear those lower-tier comedians grinding out their craft for a chance at the big time at the many comedy clubs listed below.
The Loft Comedy Shows at Plainridge Park Casino
The Loft features a wide variety of entertainment. In addition to comedians and comic hypnotists, live swing bands and musicians also play The Loft. The Headliners Comedy Club has intermittent stand-up with special by New England’s own Bob Marley.
Foxwoods Headliners Shine
Foxwoods has two large concert venues that include more top comedians than any other casino in New England. The previous history of talented headliners included Tom Segura, Colin Quinn, Ron White, Gabriel Iglesias, Pablo Francisco, Dave Attell, Andrew Dice Clay, and Brian Regan.
MGM Springfield, Where Comedy Roars
The historic Armory at MGM Springfield is the place to go for laughs at Roar!, MGM’s Comedy Club. John Tobin Presents developed this unique comedy series, which features an eclectic mix of nationally popular comedians and rising industry stars. When the club opened, John Tobin, CEO of John Tobin Presents, was extremely pleased with MGM. He concluded, “They are an incredible organization to work with. The Armory is a magnificent venue, and it’s going to be a stunning space for guests of MGM and people throughout the area to come to check out the funniest stand-up comedians working today.” To date, this venue has not disappointed me. All shows are 18+ with ID required at the door. For everything that is Roar!, click on the link.
Mohegan Sun Arena & Comix
Mohegan Sun opened Comix in the fall of 2015. Previously, it spent five years at Foxwoods. It’s an intimate 325-seat venue — from the small stage to the five front-row booths to the four rows of VIP seating before groups of tables in the back. Food is available and has a bar connected known for its craft beer — including some local brews — and bourbon selection (more than 50 of them). It has changed the space next door from a slots room to Comic Roadhouse, with the comedy club left as is.
