Stevie Wonder’s composition said it best:
“When you believe in things that you don’t understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain’t the way”
But superstition is a part of the gambler’s creed for many. Take the following popular examples:
- Rub and talk to that slot machine to “warm it up,”
- Don’t use $50 – they’re unlucky unlucky.
- Never count your money while you are playing
- Lucky charms bring luck, don’t forget them.
- Don’t use the front entrance, based on the belief that upon entering the casino, the bad luck of people who are leaving, having supposedly lost, may rub off on you
Superstitions & luck – important to gamblers of all levels.
Today is April 13th – Friday the 13th!
While Western cultures have historically associated the number 12 with completeness (there are 12 days of Christmas, 12 months and zodiac signs, just to name a few examples), its successor 13 has a long history as a sign of bad luck. Fear of the number 13 has even earned a psychological term: triskaidekaphobia.
Did you know a study in the British Medical Journal, published in 1993, concluded that there “is a significant level of traffic-related incidences on Friday the 13th as opposed to a random day, such as Friday the 6th. Will that stop people from driving to their favorite casino? No! In the casino, it’s just another day.
First of all, remember it’s a Friday – Payday! Singles night! A night many routinely go to their casino, whether it’s unlucky or not. Friday the 13th won’t deter most from their gambling and entertainment routines.
Secondly, how many of you have actually stayed on the 14th floor of a casino hotel (which we know is really the 13th) and had an amazing winning gambling session. That “13” didn’t really matter, did it?
Finally, try following this: Superstitious Gamblers will not let other superstitions get in the way of their normal superstitions. In other words, it seems we choose our beliefs with the selective memory that we gamble with – remembering good luck or bad luck as it fits us.
So drink, eat, gamble and be merry this Friday The 13th. Just don’t stray under any ladders or pick up any stray black cats.
