In the northeast, school closings can happen for many winter-related reasons, from timing problems for morning school transportation to Nor’easters. But it’s not just kids that get excited.
As a teacher in Connecticut years ago, I used to get just as excited, because it meant casino day.
While I love visiting the casino in the morning because of the lack of people around, eventually the casino fills up. But on snow days, the casino stayed empty, with less buses and a lot less local traffic (never mind long distance visitors).
Mohegan Sun was my escape for the day. Table games to play without the throngs of gamblers. Craps tables with just a few patrons around the table. And slots – so many unmanned slot machines, you could choose any machine you wanted. With breaks to walk around, it was a winter wonderland inside away from the elements. Instead of water, you asked the beverage staff for hot chocolate! I could even stop in at the VIP lounge, and be let in because of the lack of people, feeling like one of the high-rollers.
It was great for my Average Daily Theoretical, too. I could take my time with whatever my bankroll I brought and use the time aspect of ADT in my favor. The day was mine!
There were some downsides. Sometimes, in a large casino such as Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun, due to a lack of staff available, things restaurants would be closed, or even entire casino areas. Fewer cashiers would be available, and in those days, hopper fills would take much longer. Waiting for drinks?…well expect longer because they would be poorly understaffed. But still, time was your friend.
Fond memories of days gone by. So, on a day like today, I remember those old snow days. But, be safe in getting there. Always remember not to risk an accident. Check the roads first.
Otherwise, enjoy the calm, the freshness, the lack of annoyances in your local casino on a snow day. You may get excited just like a kid again.
