Twin River has been given approval for its next step in the Southern New England casino competition.
While there have been no signs of its approved hotel, Twin River Management Group has been approved by state residents and Tiverton residents (although, not by much in Tiverton) to build a casino. TRMG owns Twin River Casino, Newport Grand Casino, and Hard Rock Biloxi in Mississippi.
The hotel and casino off Route 24 near the Fall River border is scheduled to open in July of 2018, close to the opening of Springfield MGM Casino in Massachusetts.
While the Mashpee Wampanoags “First Light” Casino in project is in turmoil, and not expected to change soon, Twin River would have two casinos in 2018 to compete with Plainridge Park Casino. Plainridge has been underwhelming, but still earning a sizable amount of revenue for Massachusetts. Another casino east on the New Bedford border could do more harm to the new slot parlor located in Plainville, MA.
According to WPRINews12, Twin River Chairman John Taylor said that the work will begin on the casino and hotel right away. “In competitive markets, convenience is a critical driver of success,” said Taylor.
The casino will feature 1,000 slot machines and 30 table games, and the hotel will have 80 rooms. The Tiverton Patch includes more information about the proposal here.
Taylor also said it took input from Tiverton citizens seriously. “So there’s no tower, there’ll be no signage on route 24 that says there’s a casino here, there will be no neon signs in the community. We really listened to what the residents told us.”
Up to 600 jobs and $4 million a year will be brought into the town, according to Taylor.
By 2019, Tiverton will be competing with three Massachusetts casinos – MGM Springfield, Plainridge Casino and Wynn Boston Harbor. TRMG will seemingly be surrounded by competition, including Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.
Tiverton has two potent parts to help TRMG increase the Rhode Island state coffers which rely on gambling & lottery as its 3rd highest revenue source:
- The only casino with a hotel in the Massachusetts & Rhode Island border area.
- Most importantly, it has table games. Enough that it will continue to put pressure on Foxwoods and steal Plainridge patrons not wanting to travel west, east or south to play Blackjack, Roulette, Craps and other table games.
As soon as the casino opens in Tiverton, New port Grand will close its doors as a casino. No word on what that building will be used for after 2018.
