Newport Grand Casino Targets Wednesdays Promotions, Waiting For November Referendum.

Is the sun setting on Newport Grand?

Is the sun setting on Newport Grand?

Newport Grand – the forgotten New England Casino. Newport Grand in Newport, Rhode Island, and Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, Massachusetts offer slots and electronic games, but Plainridge seems to get the headlines – it’s new, clean, non-smoking and wasn’t put in an old Jai Alai fronton.

But while Newport Grand could be shuttered in favor of a full-fledged casino in Tiverton, depending on the outcome of an Election Day referendum in November, it continues to push forward.  Bought by Twin River Management Group in July last year, Twin River’s argument that Rhode Island voters should approve the ballot referendum in November for a casino/hotel that Twin River is proposing in Tiverton to help offset revenue that is or would be lost to new and existing gambling facilities in Massachusetts – especially if the Wampanoag’s “First Light” casino project in Taunton, MA is allowed to continue again.

It was thirty years ago that the 3,000 seat Newport Grand Jai Alai fronton was packed with fans who came to wager on legendary athletes, mostly Spanish Basques, wore brightly colored uniforms and employed claw-like cestas in order to catch and fire rock-hard pelotas at speeds reaching 150 mph. This was an era when there were no slots, Connecticut casinos or Internet wagering, and horse racing was still relevant in New England.

Now is the time of the New England “brick-and-mortar” casinos – large and small, slots-only to resorts and those in between.

Tell us what you think of Newport Grand.  Consider this:

  • Is it’s best times behind it?
  • Should it be closed to open operations in Tiverton?
  • If the Tiverton Casino is overturned, what does the future hold for Newport Grand Casino?

Newport Casino still tries to be considered a candidate in the New England casino scene.  And for it’s size, stranded from the main casino battles, it strives to continue to offer what it’s patrons expect: good food, decent gambling and increasingly aggressive promotions.  Newport Grand has two good promotions slated for Wednesdays this September. Hello Super Fan Monika
Sorry for the delay in responding to your comment. (School has started)
I didn’t know how to respond to your comment. In many ways I agree – “unglamorous” to say the least. But they are kinda doing the best they can with what they have. Newport has renovated the casino recently, added electronic table games, and has decent entertainment opportunities with a tradition of Tribute Bands in it’s Event Center, Karaoke & Trivia nights.

That being said, I hope that they move it to Tiverton as well. A new casino, with hotel will be interesting to visit – owned by Twin River Management Group and hopefully a connected players club. Anything would be better with what they are stuck with right now. Especially when an “uppity” part of Newport has never supported it.

Thanks for following, love your comments.

Binbin, thank you for keeping us up-to-date on all the casino news. I’m happy to hear Newport Grand might be closing, because a few years ago, I took a day trip to Newport from where I live in Boston, partly to see Newport, but partly to check out that casino. I was thoroughly disappointed. I found it unglamorous, the restaurant in more like a diner than a casino restaurant, and the gaming forgettable. Shutting it and opening another might be a good idea, unless it has improved since I visited.
