Twin River Casino’s lack of concern for the impact of Plainridge Park Casino seems correct. Plainridge Park Casino, Massachusetts’s first casino of four in its gambling expansion has done well, but maybe not well enough for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
Twin River VLT Report
According to The Rhode Island Lottery VLT Revenue Information (by Facility), while it’s revenue decreased 1% from May to June in 2016, they have actually increased 1% in the fiscal year from June 2015 to June 2016. According to The American Casino Guide, “These machines are the same as regular video gaming devices but are called lottery terminals because they are regulated by the state’s lottery commission which receives a share of each machine’s revenue.” Except for the name and where the money goes to, Rhode Island’s VLT’s are same as any Vegas-style slot machine, complete with TITO.
Twin River – A Casino Like no Other?
Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI has done some bizarre things in the past:
- concentrating on Tribute Bands instead of headliners in their Event Center
- expecting players to RSVP for free slot play and multipliers
- offering few video poker machines with horrible paytables
- diminishing dining options and replaced with fast food

Changes on the Horizon?
But, some adjustments and additions at TR might be pointing to changes on the rise. To quote Bob Dylan, “…the times, they are a-changin’ ”
A huge promotion the past months has been to match the slot offers of Connecticut Casino players, lately expanded to all New England casino – including Plainville’s slot parlor 20 minutes away. In August, they will be expanding to Sunday through Thursday, 10am – 10pm. It applies to the same day promotion and you must have the actual mailer with you. RSVP restrictions are not expected for this promotion, as well as Twin River’s own free slot play offers.
More headliners are performing at the TR Event Center – Boyz to Men, Rick Springfield, Bret Michaels, Styx, UB40 and more. A special concert with Tower of Power and the Average White Band is scheduled for November 12.
The introduction of weekly buffets for TR players (RSVP) by mailers is another option not offered. Hopefully this could be transformed into buffets on holidays – Mothers Day, Valentine’s Day, etc… – and be open to the general public. The original Twin River buffet was changed years ago into a Fast Food Court.
Their poker room, while an afterthought on the second floor (non-smoking floor), has been extremely popular. Too bad it’s so small. For more reading on the poker room, check out Top 10 impressions of the Twin River poker room by Dan Podheiser
More Changes Needed
Unfortunately, two things must improve to continue to compete with the electronic table games at Plainridge and the CT Casinos – lower table minimums and much improved video poker. The only playable Video Poker continues to be located in CT. Twin river offers nothing playable, except (if you’re desperate) four nickle Ultimate X 3,5, & 10 line VLT’s with DDB and a 7/5 paytable. Minimums at table games start at $10 – ALL THE TIME! C’mon, at least a few $5 tables during the week should be provided.
Finally, the website – if you do not receive mailers for your play at TR, they might at well consider you dead. They generic website does NOTHING to encourage newbies to their property and is one of the worst to navigate, find promotions, find dining specials, and frankly, NE Time Gambling gives you more information about Twin River than they do!
Now, the next part still needs to be done – where’s that hotel I’ve been hearing about?
