Today’s post is all about the “Shoe City”, Brockton.  Steve Crosby, Chairmain of the MGC, recently said that the Massachusetts Gaming Commission will hold its final hearing on plans for a Brockton casino on March 28 and may have a decision by the end of April.  The hearing and deliberation process could lead to a license for Mass Gaming & Entertainment/Rush Street Gaming, a team planning a commercial casino at the Brockton Fairgrounds.

Now, Mass Gaming & Entertainment/Rush Street Gaming will have until March 24 to provide a response to the Mashpee tribe’s presentation concerning their “First Light” casino/resort in Taunton.  Questions continue to surround the addition of one OR the other, not both.  If there are two casinos in Region C, the state would receive no taxes from the tribal casino.

At the final hearing for the casino in Brockton before the MGC makes their final decision, the developer behind the proposed casino in Brockton insisted that the Mashpee casino in Taunton may never be constructed, or may be mired by a legal challenge for five years, a decade or even longer.  According to Mark Larocque of WickedLocal.com, Brockton City Council President Timothy Cruise and Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter appealed to the commission to sympathize with the economic plight of Brockton.  “A destination resort casino, surrounded by an entertainment district, will transform the image of Brockton from a city to drive through, to a city to drive to,” Carpenter said.

However, opponents of the casino felt that this high-pressure sales pitch was really a timely ultimatum, saying the project is ready to go NOW.
