The New London Day included an editorial yesterday outlining reasons not to delay in the third casino proposal in Connecticut.  “The intent is to keep casino-goers from the greater Hartford area from taking their business to MGM Springfield.”

Agreed.  The threat MGM poses to Connecticut’s casinos in southeastern CT is valid.  No matter how you feel about MGM, their purpose is to make money as is the rest of the casino industry in New England & the U.S.  The problem for Connecticut is – they’re good at it!

The joint venture of  Mohegans & Pequots in Connecticut called MMCT has been moving along with potential sites and developers from East Hartford to Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks.  But the MMCT says it will not get a proposal to the legislature in 2016.  This delay will increase the anticipation all over New England as MGM Springfield & Wynn Everett finally get building their casinos.

This wait in forward action is a serious balancing act and timing.  At some point, the deep loyalty of patrons in CT will be questioned by the exciting complex in Springfield and the immense expectations of in Everett.  According to the Day, “Any feet dragging by the MMCT will only play into that strategy [of a third casino] and erode support for the current plan.”

Agreed! And let’s remember the state proposal is still being sued by MGM for unfair advantage concerning free commerce and equal treatment.

Yet another possible legislative delay was raised by the Connecticut House commerce committee. Rep. Chris Perone raised a concept for the bill that would require the state to study “the costs and benefits of establishing commercial gaming.”  The study would be an analysis on how a third casino would affect jobs and revenues in the state, as well as consider whether to broaden the site search beyond the I-91 and Hartford corridor. While sound in logic, it misses the big picture –

IT NEEDS TO GET DONE SOON or NOT AT ALL.

NOTE – Massachusetts was enamored with it’s little “slot-box” in Plainville.  And while not reaching the MGC’s overblown predictions, it’s revenue is still on par with the other Penn National’s 27 casinos – including Maine’s Bangor casino. Imagine how all those Massachusetts patrons will feel about staying in-state to visit their own mega-casinos, before their loyalty is challenged by CT’s Hartford casino, MMCT’s Casino #3.

Bottom line – if the third casino were to open a year or less before MGM Springfield, the impact of Springfield’s new casino could be too much to overcome by a smaller third casino in the Hartford area.

That’s all for now.
