Stupid Poker Player At Borgata and the Lesson It Teaches

I was going to post today about how comically stupid some criminals can be when I read a story about bogus chips in Atlantic City. But then, I thought, “This could be a teaching moment.” So, here is a both.  A story about how stupid criminals can be, and what it can mean to you and me.

I was reading about the poker tournament at Borgata in Atlantic City where a “significant number of counterfeit chips” were used. So, because of that, state regulators canceled the tournament. The rest of the story is quite comical.

According to reports, the situation began to take a weird turn when casino officials at Harrah’s Resort and Casino in Atlantic City discovered that someone had flushed 2.7 million worth of counterfeit poker chips down the toilet in a hotel room. Apparently, forty-two-year-old Christian Lusardi of Fayetteville, N.C., the man staying at Harrah’s next door, obviously wasn’t a science major. It seems he didn’t realize that poker chips wouldn’t break up quick enough in the plumbing and not causethe toilets in the hotel to overflow, especially in his hotel room.

Lusardi cashed in before all was found out for $6,814 in the tournament. He was the chip leader going into Day 2 before his day and the tournament went down the tubes, so to speak. Go figure!

“This is the first time we’ve had anything like this happen in our 10 years in business, and it’s the first time I’ve seen this in my 27 years in gaming,” Borgata Senior Vice President Joe Lupo told Press of Atlantic City. A total of 4,814 players put up the $560 to enter. The remaining prize money was frozen after the tournament was canceled.

Now the teaching moment……
Once, in Las Vegas, I had a ticket stolen from my machine, while I had stood up – yes, it can happen that fast – and security at the Red Rock Resort Casino had my money back to me within an hour. You see, the guy who took it was a regular at the casino, and they found the redemption machine he cashed it in, and then found him in the poker room with my money. Really, how stupid is that? Most people would have left the building. Not this guy. Wow.

But it was what security told me that I’ll never forget. Remember there are two types of people at the casino. Most are there for what the casino offers such as gambling, dining, entertainment and the fun involved. But there is always a small group of people that go to a casino for one reason, to take advantage of other people.

So, enjoy your casino visit, but just be wary of that certain few around you. Don’t be distracted, know where your valuables are, and watch your tickets and money. Have fun, but be careful out there.

That’s all for now.
